Straw Hat gives good advice. Soapy water works fine. Some swear by Windex with Vinegar, and others mix up water and all manner of additives, but like Straw Hat soapy water works for me.

One caution...make sure your cases are DRY before putting them in the tumbler, or you will find the insides of the brass packed with media. If you are in a hurry, hit them with a blow dryer for a few minutes and get them hot and DRY before putting them in your tumbler.

I prefer to deprime after tumbling. I do not want to risk any particles of tumbling media getting stuck in the flash hole.

J Bar, if grit gets stuck, wouldn't it get dislodged when you resize? Or do you resize when you deprime?

I you're going to be loading for a Springfield Trapdoor, I would highly recommend "loading Cartridges for the Original .45-70 Springfield Rifle and Carbine" by Pat Wolf. I got a springfield Trapdoor about 15 years ago and could hit the proverbial barn door with it. I finally got this book and I finally got some real nice accuracy with it. You can call Pat at 619-482-1701 or get a hold of him at [email protected].

loose noose,

Spence Wolf died a few years back. His wife, Pat, is still selling the book. Good book and is always recommended to Trapdoor shooters. Some of the information is outdated but the majority of it is still accepted and valid.

StrawHat, your absolutely right, It been quite a while back that I got that book, but now that you mentioned it I do remember. I still open the primer hole, and use a pure lead to 5% tin in casting my 405 grain bullets, which allows the bullet to open and follow the lands and grooves. At 250 yards out here in Arizona I could hit the 36" steel gong 8out of 10 times:)
