Trying to decide between the 870 Express and Nova in 12 gauge. I'm pretty sure I can get the 870 Express for $219 plus tax and the Nova for $299 plus tax.

I know this has been debated ad nauseum. My other shotgun is a Remington 11-87. I probably can't go wrong with either one.

Any last minute suggestions?

Thanks,
Scott

Handle 'em both and see which one you prefer. I'd opt for the 870, as I just can't warm up to the Nova (despite having a couple Benelli autos), but that's just me.

Get the 870.

I got to spend some quality time with my Brother-in-Law's Nova. I really like this gun. But when crunch time comes I still prefer my 870.

The 870, by a nose.

Novas rattle, and the few I've tried must have had triggers designed by Sarah Brady.Longevity is probably good but unproven.

870s have good triggers, rattle little, and last a long, long, long time....

Thanks for the responses....

870 it is!!! Just picked it up this afternoon. It is cleaned, lubed and ready to go. Will take it to the range on Tuesday.

your 870

txgolfer45,

post how you think the 870 shot and also what type and shot size of shells did you use, also what pattern did you see.

The start of my skeet league got postponed. I will try to get out there this weekend.

Finally got it out to the range

I was on the skeet range. Have never used a pump before. It performed well. I used the Estate 1 oz. 12 gauge target/field shells. I was able to get several doubles with it. It had the modified choke in it. It doesn't shoot as easy as my 11-87 28 inch. But, then again, I didn't really expect it to either.

The action was surprisingly smooth for a brand new shotgun. No problems with misfeeds or ejecting shells. It is definitely a keeper.

I paid $236 out the door for it. Money well spent!

Got my first shotgun today. Picked up a 870 Express Magnum. I handled a good many and kept comparing them to the 870. To me the 870 was a "perfect" fit. Felt pretty well balanced, smooth action and trigger. Broke it down per the manual and followed Dave's recomendations. Tomorrow I'll be hitting the range with my dad and a buddy to shoot some single clays and try to do some pattering. I'll let you guys know how I did.

Later,

Dave

Congrats, Renegade, on the new acquisition. That 870 is a keeper.....sounds just like the one I got for Christmas from the wife.

Ditto on the light loads.....my scores have actually gone up since switching to the AA 1oz or 7/8oz loads.

Made it to the range yesterday and took my dad along to try out the 870. The lightest loads I was able to find (in a hurry) was some 1 1/8oz Winchester Universal loads(picked up 100). Got to the range, told the guys there I wanted to pattern and then shoot some single clays. They didn't want me patterning, due to the fact the target frames were just re-built last week, but didn't care if we shot clays.

I started off the first box of shells. Half way thru the box I had only nailed 3 and that's with a "softball" my dad tossed out in front of me. Man, I looked like a complete idiot! But, hey I was having a good time. Dad finished off the first box and didn't do much better than I did. Gave it a rest while I helped dad sight in is '06.

While I was helping dad sight in his rifle, I relized why I didn't do better. I was "aiming" instead of pointing. Second box of shells I did much better, broke 11 clays, I can't say how many clays dad "launched" for me, just how many I broke. Lets just say out of 25 shells 11 of them broke a clays.

Third box of shells, I was gaining some confidence, not much, but gaining none the less. Got a pretty good grasp of "leading" from another guy at the range, as he gave me a quick impromptu lesson before he left for the day. We took turns taking shots and he gave me some pointers when I was up. Learned alot, took a breather, let things cool down and checked the choke tube to make sure it was still snug in the muzzle.

Things cooled down and I was ready to apply what I had just learned. Let the slaughter commence! The confidence level was in the stratosphere! Dad was getting the hang of the hand thrower and was really "launching" those clays now. I was bustin' 'em quite regularly, I decided if I missed with the first shot I would see how fast I could get I second shot off. I was only able to hit one with a quick follow-up, not bad for a newbie. On the second quick follow-up, went to eject the round and the slide wouldn't come back :uhoh: , done went and messed things up. I gave it a few minutes to cool down before attempting to clear the spent shell. It cooled down and for GPs, I decided to try the slide again before I took any drastic measures, bingo, eject one fired hull. Finished off the box without any more IIM (idiot induced malfunctions). Out of the last 25, 22 broke a clay, a marked improvement :D!

Overall I really enjoyed shooting the 870. With target loads it has less recoil than my '06. Now, I got to get to the store and get some more shells.

Later,

Dave
