Going to trade a fellow for a Benelli M4, things to look for?

I'm going to meet a fellow tomorrow to trade a semi-custom 1911 of mine for a Benelli M4 (and a pile of extras). We are meeting at a rifle range (1/2 way between us) so we can each perform function checks on the weapons.

Is there anything in particular that I should check for on the M4? It has been many years since I owned a pump shotgun, and I've never owned an auto.

The M4 is one of the factory "Desert Storm" cammo jobs. The current owner ordered the collapsible stock from Benelli, installed it, and has replaced a few parts (with USA parts) to keep it legal. The trigger group is not OEM. He says it runs, and all the OEM parts are included in the deal.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I don't know how "custom" your 1911 is but M4s are going for almost two grand these days and you rarely find them discounted. Way over-priced imo but, counterintuitively, worth the fare if reliability and quality of material and workmanship is important to you. Mine has the "H20" finish and I like it a lot.

Oh yeah...I want the M4 because I intend for it to bounce around in my Jeep all summer without being cleaned or babied. Been wanting one for years, but as you said...I didn't especially want to pay for one.

I met the fellow today. We found a range between us and tried out each other's guns. Made the deal and everyone is happy. He was a really nice guy.

I had an older Nighthawk Gov't .45 that he was lusting after, and he had a "Desert Camo" M4 that he converted to high capacity, collapsible OEM stock, and all the USA-made parts that it needed to stay legal. He was so excited to get the NH that he included a new Holosun sight, WML, case, all OEM parts, and 200 rounds of new factory ammo for the shotgun.

Instant shotgunner kit! Hehe.

I’m curious as to what company made the trigger group. The OEM trigger group is insanely expensive, and the only aftermarket ones that I have seen are double that.

I was told the trigger group came from Freedom Fighter Tactical, and that the rifle has the "922r kit". Seems to be true, as the packaging for the kit now contains the OEM parts. It's pretty spendy IMO.

“Spendy” is the right word there. Those parts are quite expensive.

The M4 is hugely fun to shoot. Buy some slugs, and you won’t need a spotting scope to see the holes at 50 yards. :D

Haha. I wanted something short to keep in my roof top tent while camping, and plan to load with alternating slugs and buckshot. I'll need to make sure I have the right choke in the M4 for both.
