Hello,

I am looking for some good videos or other resources on basic strikes and combatives performed in a manner for realistic self defense with a stick that is about 1 meter long (around 40 inches)... thats Hanbo/walking stick territory. I have done is a few basic Kali drills from time to time and the Krav stick work which is generally done with shorter (baton length) sticks.

I am a big fan of simple techniques with big margins of error and the more realistic the techniques the better!

I am also a big fan of drills that start with people very close to the practitioner.

Thank in advance!

For a simple technique start with the basic bayonet drill. Thrust, parry, slash. Repeat.
Hard for someone to defend against if done with proper footwork and screaming vituperous epitaphs.

Here's a hour and half Hanbo lesson given by Daniel Verkerke. Rather than most short vids that just show a strike demonstrated, this is an actual lesson that explains the purpose of moves and strikes and how to perform combinations. Adaptable to Hanbo and canes. Definitely worth the price (free)!

Looks like they're mostly swinging from the shoulder/wrist and not really getting power from the hips or the legs into their strikes. When I was taking Kali, we didn't break the wrist like that on a swing, and let the power come from our legs/hips.

I'm not saying I'm willing to let one of those guys whack me with a stick, but the difference stood out.

Simple bayonet based techniques, aimed at non-martial arts people.
Gross motor movements, so no fancy dexterous actions required.

I like this. It does remind me very much of bayonet or riot baton training, but rather than focusing on several maneuvers, goes into more depth on three (two, really) key ones. This seems like a very practical approach for teaching people something they can use in a short amount of time.

Different arts, different techniques. Hanbo and cane techniques often transition to control techniques.

I like Silat and FMA, but I think of them as more baton & knife styles, plus exotic weapons.

Cane & Hanbo (& staves) for me, come from Hapkido and Kendo.
