Good .44 magnum revolver?

Looking around at .44 magnum revolvers. Thinking of getting one sometime in the near future. What are some good ones out there that aren't a small fortune?

Not looking for a super fancy good looking one. Just one I could carry with me for hiking/camping, etc.

I looked at the Taurus .44 Tracker but heard mixed reviews about that gun. My one buddy said to stay away from Taurus. Others seem to think they're fine. I know Ruger and S&W make some nice ones but they're pretty pricey. Just curious what folks have on here and their experiences.
I have all 3 brands Ruger Super RedHawk , S&W 629 Classic Power Port and Taurus Raging Bull all 3 in 44 magnum I would not hesitate to buy another Taurus the first Raging Bull I shot it to death when it broke could not cock it single action called Taurus and they sent me a shipping label.Sent it back got a email a couple days later telling me to call CS , talked to a young man and he tells me they can’t fix it so I ask him now what, he tells me they are honoring the life time warranty on it. He then asks me if this LGS is near me tell him yes it is I am then told they are going to send a exact replacement gun to them for me five days later I have a new Raging Bull. I cannot say enough good about Taurus I also have a Tracker in 357 have never had a problem with it so with all this said I would not ever hesitate to buy another Taurus don’t be afraid of them they have came a long ways since they first came to the USA. As far as the Ruger and S&W go I have had issues with both of them also, all 3 are good buy what you can afford.

Sounds good! Pretty cool they fixed your gun so quickly. That's good to hear.

Now I'm looking at the Taurus 44 vs the Taurus Tracker .44. It's a lot of gun for the money. I won't be serious about buying for another couple months, so I'll have some time to think it over.

Thanks for the advice!

I've been looking for quite a while for one. I think they're just a myth. ;)
They exist...for a long time they were cheap when you could find one. Not so much any more. Cool design and high quality, but unobtanium parts. I've been looking for a beater Astra large frame revolver just to have as a parts gun if this one ever breaks. There were at least two variations of the Terminator, It's a shame that there isn't more information available for Astra revolvers.

They are a little quirky, grips are RB K/L grip frame size, but most S&W grips won't actually work unless you relocate the screw hole, the tradeoff for having an adjustable main spring in the grip frame. They are the same frame size as an N frame and just as well made. I don't think anybody sold Astra Terminators except for Jovino, so every Astra Terminator is a Jovino custom.

They are good guns don’t be afraid of them my Raging Bull is very accurate and they come already ported , very nice shooting 44 magnum. They replaced the Raging Bull with the Raging Hunter I am looking at possibly getting the 357 with the 8.5 inch barrel.

I had a Super Red Hawk with a scope. Great gun but I also had a Taurus Raging Bull. The Raging Bull was ported and had less recoil and Muzzle flip. I liked the Taurus better. The Ruger is a better gun. Both were double action.

I'd like to find one in 45LC.

This thread is about .44 Mag, but I passed on several makes; Colt Anaconda, S&W 629, Ruger Vaquero and Super Blackhawk, even three different Taurus Trackers we have in right now, for this:

A 25-5 in .45 Colt. I have wanted one for the last 50 years, and things kind of fell into place. Guess I will have the bear gun covered with this one.

I kept looking at Trackers in both .44 and .357 (we have one of those in stock right now also) for years, but I think this N frame should scratch my big bore itch for a while, at least.

Nice choice !
Nice choice !
While I am a big proponent of 41 Mag, really like the M25 - have to confess; carried the M25 several times lately - when in the past would have had a 41.

I really like the S&W 629 with 5" barrel, but not for $1100! Kinda pricey. The Taurus isn't as nice but still seems to be a pretty solid gun based on what I've heard/read and it's only $550-600 online. About half the price.

I guess I better take a look at ammo prices too for .44 special and .44 magnum. I'm sure that's not cheap either. I finally ran out of .357 the other day so I need to stock back up on that. My favorite ammo to buy is .22, you can buy a ton of it for hardly nothing!

Yeh, unless money is of little concern, if you plan on shooting .44 spl or mag on a regular basis it is definitely worth looking into reloading. If you just shoot every once In a while I guess its not a big deal.
I don't shoot that often and I have other guns and calibers that I shoot, so it sort of spreads things out. I think it took me about a year to get through the three boxes of .357 I bought when I first got my GP100. I've shot a lot of .22 and 9mm over the year though.

As of this moment, CDNN currently has both Taurus M44s ($600) and Raging Hunters ($900) in .44 Mag in their "overstock sale".
I saw Grabagun had the Taurus M44 for $553 right now which is pretty sweet. Not quite in the market yet though. I'm sure when the time comes and I'm ready to buy it'll be back up to regular price again haha!

For hiking a SW 69 would be ideal in my book. 5 shot L frame, bianchi thumb break holster, carries like a dream. Great trigger, good sights, I have the hogue tamer grips and recommend that swap as the gun is a bit snappy with the short barrel and light weight. You can run, jump without parts falling off, sit on logs without the barrel lifting your belt off, get at the gun in winter gear without tangling yourself up if in brush or undressing to get at the gun if it’s raining, no optics exposed to fog, snow etc. generally I forget it’s there.

I am a big fan of the Dan Wesson 744. After deciding on a 44 mag the next question is usually "what length barrel do I want?"

index.php

The barrels take me about 2 minutes to swap in the field. The brake can be added to any of the barrels also in about 2 minutes. The trigger is as good or better than any S&W trigger I have ever shot. The build quality is exquisite and it will take any Ruger only 44 mag load. What is there not to love about a DW?

I picked up the Frame with the 8" barrel and scope mount for $650 about 5 years ago. I was saving up for a S&W 625 in 45 LC. The price on this was too good to pass up. I have no regrets choosing this DW over the S&W 625.

I added the (still being manufactured) CZ barrels one at a time. The CZ barrels are excellent quality, ever bit as good as the original Moson 8" barrel. Rather than owning several different 44 mags I own one with multiple length barrels and feel no need to buy any other 44 mag revolvers. Being able to use the brake on any barrel is just icing on the cake!

I think the Ruger blackhawk is the least expensive 44 revolver I have but I like them better than the redhawk I had.

I've a Ruger Super Blackhawk stainless 4 5/8" barrel very comfortable to carry . Had the grip frame, trigger and hammer swapped out with Bisley parts and had the barrel ported.
Shoot mostly 44 spl out of it really don't need full house 44 loads not expecting to tun into large 4 legged creatures were I live .
