Yeah, the "no reloads" rule would pretty much keep me from going there. I always try to find out ahead of time if reloads are permitted and what they have to be.

I think the range needs to fing another insurance carrier. The three ranges I'm a member of are insurad thru the NRA and all allow the use of reloads, so I see that as a non issue.

We have an unsupervised 200 yard rifle range. A few years ago, before some of the land got taken by the city for a golf driving range (long story) I set up a very nice heavy steel falling-plate machine off to one side of the regular rifle lanes, in a spot where people usually shot handguns to the "short berm". It was too much trouble to disassemble the 200-lb beast every time I used it, so I spray painted "Handguns Only" on it and left it for everyone to enjoy. 2 weeks later, some nimrod had shot several holes through, or severely cratered every plate, and put some truly impressive holes in the 3/4" thick lower deflection plate! I could hardly believe it! It cost me over $100 to have all the damage welded up, and the scars are still visible. I packed it up and noone has used it since.

many indoor ranges collect spent brass and sell it. Steel cased ammo becomes a pain for them to sort out

Nonsense. Its a lot easier than separating .308 from .243 brass, they could pull all the steel cases out with a magnet while sweeping it up.

They want your brass in addition to the range fees. IMHO any brass left behind should be a "bonus" for them, not part of their business model.

I think the steel cased ammo ban is two-fold. Some ranges probably have it so they can collect more brass and spend less time sorting out the steel cases. The other reason for the ban is the theory that steel case = steel-cored or steel-jacketed bullet.

Does anyone know if there is steel in the bullet of the pistol ammo offered by the Russian ammo makers (Wolf, Silver Bear, Brown Bear, Tula, etc.)?

Also, would a steel or bi-metal jacket really make that much of a difference in penetration capability?

I don't believe so.

18 U.S.C. Section 921(a)(17)(B) prohibits handgun ammo defined as armor-piercing:
(i) a projectile or projectile core which may be used in a handgun and which is constructed entirely (excluding the presence of traces of other substances) from one or a combination of tungsten alloys, steel, iron, brass, bronze, beryllium copper, or depleted uranium; or

(ii) a full jacketed projectile larger than .22 caliber designed and intended for use in a handgun and whose jacket has a weight of more than 25 percent of the total weight of the projectile.

So it is possible there may be some steel but not enough to have any real effect besides economy of production.

Their business, their rules. In the Long Run the Market will determine how successful they are.
Regarding people who refuse to adhere to the rules, my mother once referred to "People who can't spend more than 10 seconds a day thinking about anyone but themselves."

The conflict comes when they change the rules after you have paid. Like I posted earlier I once joined a 24 hour gym for a year and shortly afterward they decided to start closing at 9:00 PM. I got my money back.

It's quite shocking how many idiots are out there shooting guns, actually.

I belong to a private range (and it's not inexpensive), and even then people shoot armor piercing rounds at the steel targets, shoot rifles at the handgun plates, shoot the target holders & destroy them (not accidental hits, the holders are on the ground), shoot tracers and cause range fires, and on and on.

Education doesn't seem to be doing any good, these guys are jerks.

There is a range near Detroit that I went to a couple of months or so ago. Clearly marked no steel core ammo signs everywhere, some dude with a .45 in the lane next to me thought that wasn't important. My best friend tended to disagree after he caught a ricochet in the shoulder.

This guy was shooting steel cored .45ACP ammo? He had bigger problems than violating a range rule, then (see post 31). Are you SURE?

Give the public access to a SHOOTING RANGE. Think about this for a moment.

This is a place where everything past the firing line is exposed to supersonic projectiles made of lead, copper, steel, etc. You CANNOT expect the general shooting public to not damage anything and everything past the firing line. It just won't happen. If you want a nice range with steel targets that don't get completely torn up in a week or two, you need a private range that holds users accountable for their actions (video surveillance, or constant RO presence).

The gun club I belong to has a 100 yd and 200 yd big bore range, a pistol range, and a small bore range, all are separate ranges. On the pistol range it states on each stall," No metal bullets allowed, only lead." There are also hanging steel gongs to shoot, 1 1/2" thick. Some idiot came into the pistol range and shot holes through the hanging gongs, rifle brass left on the range! On the big bore ranges, there are 2 target setups @ 50 yds., one on each end of the range, for those sighting in scopes, etc. About 2 weeks ago, some fools took shotguns to those 50 yd. target stands, getting ready for turkey season, they not only shot to hell the target backings, but shot the 4X6 posts holding the targets all to pieces too ! How this is known, the shot shells were left on the ground. Someone on the small bore range shot all of the sheep, deer and other steel targets with hi powered rifles also, totally ruined all of those targets. If not club members, then it was their guests who shot these items all to pieces, gate has a lock that only members have the combo for, you decide.

Club officers have leads as to whom did this, expulsion will be done when final investigation complete. Not a cheap club to join, so why shoot everything up, to get your monies worth? And then not show up for work days to repair your asinine damage? Clearly those who think things are to be handed to them!
