Ha!!!!

Hey wmgeorge!! Thanks so much, that's a very nice complement!! Maybe a book one day so folks could do their own "in house" training. We have a most excellent book available to us already by Jerry Kuhnhausen on the Colt Single Action. It gives you a step by step "how to" as far as production with hand fitting notes. It also gives "tuning" "how to's" and "what to do's". In fact, I learned my craft from Mr.Jim Martin who is featured prominently throughout the whole book! I am a very fortunate feller to have such an education!!!

Well OK Harvey but I would think that even after your response at post #31 ( everyone knows I had called you and you even thanked me for that), you couldn't help but hit me two more times . . . so what am I supposed to think? I've even expressed the need and desire to get caught up after the years I've spent figuring out what is "perfect" to me. It's not going to happen over night but I'm pretty sure by the first of summer I should be basically caught up. I'd love to be able to work on THIS week what came in LAST week (which would give me time to make calls, answer emails, work on the next thing I want to add to my service). See, that would give the customer an actual 2-3 week turnaround.
I try to help folks when they have questions here and a couple of other places but when someone posts something about me that's negative (which is fine, I'm a big boy), it seems like it's too much fun to play "pile on" (always the same crowd if you haven't noticed) which I have to assume are folks that would like my service to close down . . . which is rather aggressive on a public forum . . . which apparently is fine on some forums . . . so I guess, thanks?

Hi Goon - Would the Jerry Kuhnhausen book on SAA action that you mentioned be useful for we owners of standard C&B repros? I have Piettas and want to learn to do all I can to help them run at top performance.

EGD!,
Absolutely!! If you're interested in the mechanics and setup of the Colt action I would say it's the "Bible" for the tuner/ gunsmith. It will put in your head the fitting/build sequence and reason for the sequence (so you won't be chasing your tail like most novices do).

The Colt action is fairly unchanged from the Walker to the Mod. P.

Thanks for asking!
Mike

OK Mike Brackett, have it your way. I was done with the matter but your still responding so. You’ve got some ardent supporters here so I’ll just come off as the bad guy. Let’s not forget the thread started over a potential customer trying unsuccessfully to contact you. Wasn’t the first complaint either.

For the uniformed and reader of this response, first go back and read the Op and first few responses. I sent this person, with his permission and assurances on turn around times a pocket Remington.Turn around in this case was crucial as I reside in two locals depending on the season. Over two years later it was still not returned and Mike Brackett ignored repeated calls and texts regarding its return. Remarks earlier in this thread got results however and the piece was returned unfinished.

To any potential customer, Ive had three guns modified by GoonGun Works, The first a Walker, done in a timely manner, the second an 1862 Police took months longer had an issue, was returned to goon, issue addressed and returned in a timely manner. The third an 1860 Army took over a year and had no issues. A fourth 1851 Navy I acquired thru this forum. I’m also 78 years old, an ardent black powder shooter and Colt open top revolver fan. Don’t have time left for long turnaround times on gun smithing projects.

Work on these guns is not rocket science, it’s clever innovation. Any gunsmith can duplicate at a reasonable price.

I’ll reiterate my stance, a competent craftsman with lousy customer service when it suits him.

I’ve sent Mike Brackett a PM regarding the matter.
I’ll repeat a phrase here.
Adios Mike Brackett

Thanks Harvey.

Yes, it was un-finished because I told you from the beginning, I don't do spot welding, which would lead to refinishing and I don't do that either. I'm a tuner, not a gunsmith.

I have learned to say the word NO and don't do any repairs outside the realm of tuning.

Again, I'm a tuner, not a gunsmith.
Lunch is over so I need to get back in the shop.

Very good Mike. Just why did it take you over two years to communicate that, I sent it in March of 17, informed you I was returning to RI in late May., again in later Fall/early winter, returning to Florida, so forth and so on thru 18 into 19.
Again interested readers, no money had changed hands, this was for evaluation only. At one point when we did converse I ask if the gun was even worth the repair cost. How would you know you hadn’t looked at it, after telling me to mail it in.
You really want to keep this crap up on an open forum. You respond I’ll answer or we can just move on.
Sure glad I didn’t send the ROA with the hair trigger.

been a over 9 months now. I was originally told 6 weeks at most, but I had a few conversations and texts with Mike and I was (and AM) content to wait. I just wish he would be honest about when it would be finished and that he would communicate. Again, I don't mind waiting for whatever period of time. I just hope Mike see's this and will communicate. I'm an older guy, and none of us knows how long we have to shoot, enjoy life, etc.. I do NOT want Mike to take this as an attack on him. I totally respect his craftsmanship as I have seen SO MANY good reports and praises about his work. . As I said (this is directed to MIKE), I'd just like to know you are still there and OK and maybe an ETA on my Walker. Just the real deal...even if it is longer that i'd like to hear. Thanks! I know you ARE BUSY! , Keith in Fort Worth, TX.

Received my Walker Colt back from Mike today. It is AMAZING! I can't wait until can go shoot it. He fixed my problem with barrel fitment along with about 5 other fixes and improvements on the entire gun. The trigger feels like butter! It feels like a high quality gun now. When I sent it, it was worth nothing but hanging on the wall. Thanks Mike!

Hey Gordon, it's a "cap post" or "cap rake". It's very common in the CAS shooting arena. It pulls any cap hull or fragment of out of the safety pin slot in the hammer face. That is, if a cap is forced into the slot because of blowback through the nipple. The cap post also allows a much lighter mainspring (more like a cartridge gun) because it limits how far the hammer may be pushed back because of the same blowback.
You'll also notice a brass " action shield " mounted on the hammer. It seals the action from fouling and debris and also is a cover for the grease packed in the frame. Typically, an active Cowboy shooter can check the action once a year and decide to clean and re-pack or not. Most folks will never need to clean or even open the action when setup this way. The grease migrates throughout the frame as the action is cycled. Another big payoff is it cuts the cleaning chores down to just the barrel and cylinder. Wipe down the frame and your done!

(Ha !!! Electronic ignition !! )

I saw plans for a homebuilt muzzleloader fired by a model airplane glow plug. I don't recall if anything was said about lock time.

Wasn't there a commercial electri ignition job that flopped?

Just to add my 2 cents. I emailed Mike at Goons Gun Wirks, got a very quick response with his phone number. I called a day or two later and he explained that he was indeed swamped with work and it would be near the end of August before he saw some light. The conversation was very pleasent and he was fully honost with me. He said he would text me his address and he did as soon as we finished our conversation. World Class Customer Service is a motto he follows.

Woops, Works not Wirks.

For those interested, here are some more Walkers especially set up for hunting. These are Mr. Kaido Ojamaa's Walkers with a '60 Army thrown in! The sights and leaver latches were installed by Mr Dykes Reber of The Muzzleloader shop. 20200718_123846.jpg

Thanks Don, (wouldn't say "world class" but getting better).
