Evidently, Surefire has written and uploaded an iPhone app that will allow you to use the phone as a shot timer. I thought I wanted an iPhone before. Now I really, really want one.

Turn your iPhone into a shot timer.

Surefire have released a Shot Timer iPhone application called, you guessed it, “ShotTimer”. It shows elapsed time, split time and allows you to email results.

What would be really cool - is to use the sensors in the iPhone (i forget what they're called but they measure force and velocity) to use as a recoil meter of sorts. I imagine something along the lines of strap it to the outside of the buttstock, and as you fire it can record the velocity/force of recoil.
That would be interesting to see.

baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad idea ;)

awesome!

the instant i remember my itunes password, i'll download it!

Fantastic! I hopped on and snarfed the app before Apple finds out it has something to do with firearms and pulls it.

Thanks for the heads up. I love this place!

ok, i tested it at the Toys for Tots match today. it works GREAT!

super-convenient. I'll never be w/o a shot timer now!

nice work, surefire!

hopefully, the next version will allow you to run a whole match and calculate all the scores for you

Sooner or later somebody will port it for the google phone as well. (probably shortly after Apple yanks this one)
Google's application platform is open - which means anybody can write apps for it, and it doesn't have to have the apple seal of approval to use.

justin, the cool thing is that it's set up to email you the scores.

so you tap the 'start' button. buzzer sounds (randomizable). shots are recorded. then you hit the 'finished' button. tap the 'email' button and it goes to your email application and creates an email. you ask the shooter what their email addr is and type it in, along with yours (unless you just want to dig it out of sent) and make the subject line the stage number, and then hit send.

once the match is over, go check your email and you should have every shot for every shooter by stage, which you can then dump to excel, sort, post scores, etc.

the only problem is if you run multiple squads, you'd need every shooter to have an iphone.

seriously though, the app LOOKS good. sensitivity is easy to adjust, so i can max it out and it picks up clapping hands (or suppressed weapons), or move it to the middle for gunshots. I had it in the middle today and wasn't following the shooter around. i just stood behind the starting point and it still picked up all the shots.

rather than emailing though, i'd like it to save scores and let you type in penalties
