It was a long drive almost up to Canada, but I scrapped up some cash and got me a supply to last until I can make good quality stuff myself. They were out of 3fg. Anyhow, got lots of 1fg for Bessie, it's what she likes. I got mostly Shuetzen in 1fg as she is not fussy. Then a bunch of 2fg Swiss for the Jeager, and some Swiss 1&1/2fg to see if the Jeager likes that. If not, Bessie will like it, and Bessie has a big appetite for powder. And the Jeager does too. And then two pounds of 4fg Shuetzen for the pistols.

Still have some Goex 2fg to feed the Short Snorter, and "some" 3fg Goex. My 1861 (Springfield Rifle) seems to prefer 3fg, but we'll play around with that 1&1/2fg in it and see what it does. However, the '61 digests 2fg just fine, so I'm not hurting for 3fg.

Boda-Bang, Boda-BOOM!

So you can bring blackpowder across the US/Canada border without a fuss?
Oh I doubt that. I used to go to Canada quite a bit, and the Canadians were always cool, then coming back the U.S. border people were...wait for it...not so cool. I don't think they'd be very cool with 16 pounds of black powder. I went to Buffalo Arms, which is still South of the border. Just North of Sandpoint Idaho.

He did say " almost up to Canada ". Lowry Targets who is in Canada is where I get clay birds for the club. Even he can't or won't bring in any shotgun powders or primers along with the clay pigeons.

I haven't crossed the border since Grandma died (at age 103!), I imagine it's a lot more spit-n-polish and more difficult these days. I know getting into Canada is harder. I used to bring back Cuban Cigars, don't think I'd attempt to smuggle anything back now, especially black powder. !!! Of course the Southern border...anything goes!

Thanks for clarifying. I sort of figured it was unlikely you did so.

Been burning up Black MZ this summer, mostly. At some point I will be out and will fall back on my stash of real black, but it will be "a while" before that is an issue. Hopefully Estes has Goex up and running by then.

Sure would be nice if the powder situation improved, and you could actually buy it in a store. If Goex got going that would be a possibility. I used to turn up my nose at Goex, but it's not bad stuff. I plan to start making black powder, but I know it will take more than a few tries to really achieve excellent quality. I'm confident that I can achieve good "musket quality", for Bessie before too long. But Brown Rosie, my Jeager, I will only feed her the best. Only steak, no hamburger. And for the pistols, I want something close to Swiss in quality. Might take a year or two to get there. This batch will certainly last that long easily.

Regular Goex was OK, but Olde Eynesford was the shizzle, especially at the price. When I burn the last load of OE I will be sad.

Tell me about the big pocket watch in the left part of the picture, that's an impressive powder stash. I can't seem to find it locally.

There is none that I know of in Spokane, no powder to be had there. Post Falls Idaho and CDA have none as far as I know. Pretty sad considering the combined population of those areas. Buffalo Arms is a internet store, they don't have an actual store, but you can phone in an order and pick it up there. You have to find this unmarked building behind a welding supply place, and knock on the door. !!! I'm surprised they didn't have one of those speak-easy peek slots that slide open in the door. But great people. Then you go right in the warehouse while they pick your stuff. Long drive from where I live, but North Idaho is pretty easy on the eyes. When they have some 3fg I'd like to ride up on the motor-bike and get two or three pounds.

The big pocket watch was my Grandfather's on my mother's side. Does not work. It's a "Railroad" watch, with a steam engine engraved on the back.

I have my Grandfather's watch on my dad's side, it's solid gold, not gold plated. He was a supervisor in a gold mine/refinery, and that's what he got when he retired. We have home movies of them pouring the gold into ingots. It still works, and I carry it sometimes.

Is it easier to buy powder in Canada? If so was it difficult coming across the border?

Yes, they will trade it for bacon and donuts. And beer. I made my run through the border standing on my 1937 UL Harley Davidson, throttle stuck wide open, and a Dragoon in each hand, one tuned by the Rabbit, the other by the Goon. Both loaded with 4fg. As I crashed the gate, going 98, the Canucks said: "have a nice day aye". I fired them Dragoons until the barrels melted down, then I grabbed two more from my handlebar holsters and fought another round. So yeah, crossing the border was easy.

Actually, Ponderay Idaho is almost to Canada, but not quite. :neener: DSC07158.JPG

Them Canadians have funny names for their towns! I can’t find “Almost to Canada” in the atlas. In what Province is it located?

LOL

I’ve got 13 lbs of 3F. That should be enough for my lifetime.

3fg is a pretty good do everything powder. My .58's and .62 could live on it. Works okay in the Brown Bess, although that's more of a 2fg at least gun, and I like 1fg best in it. But, I have shot it with 3fg and it works. But, it all works better than 1fg in the pistols. !!! So 13 pounds of 3fg is not a bad thing. Is it Goex or Swiss?

Your always talking about putting 4f in a pistol. I use 3f goex or my home made 3f or ol cheap reenactor grade is my revolver. My old man saw someone blow the barrel off a 1851 Colt style gun shooting 4f. Just wondering what kinda pistol you shooting that stuff in and how much? Cause I got 2 lbs of 4F and priming my flintlock don't take much

My guess would be that the barrel was about to go no matter what powder the someone put in it. !! Probably a wreck of a pistol to begin with.

I will shoot 15 to twenty grains of 4fg in my Uberti 1862, under a ball, but 18 seems to work good. It's a fairly new pistol in good shape. 15 grains under a bullet shoots nice. I was shooting 23 grains 4fg under a ball for a little while, but really I don't need that much zip out of that little gun.

My Uberti Remington New Model Army of Navy caliber shoots 23 grains of 4fg under a 130 to 142 grain slug. That is a powerful load, but I can't see it harming a .36" on a .44" frame.

I've gone back to 35 grains of 3fg under a ball in my 1860, (DGG/ASP) but I have shot 27 grains of 4fg under a 200 grain slug. It's an old gun and I think she pops off good enough with 3fg and a ball. Just going easy on it now that it's so well tuned and timed and tightened up thanks to Jack.

I don't believe 4fg will hurt any gun in good shape. And, if you do use it and have any doubts, just drop the charge down a bit from whatever is your normal load.

Yes, my one pound of 4fg was lasting forever as priming powder. And I think I dumped more on the ground at the end of my days hunting then I ever fired in the pan. Started getting low once I began using it in the pistols.
