I'm considering one of these in the 3" barrel to add to my 3" .357 Wiley Clapp model. I remember that when these first came out there were some issues with the front sight channel and cylinder bore diameter.

In looking at used ones, is there anything specific I need to know, or serial numbers to watch for, or just a standard revolver checkout procedure? I know Ruger will make their guns right; I just dont want to have to jack with it if I can help it.

Thanks!

I have a CA Bulldog .44 Special 2.5" and I also have S&W .44 Mag. 4.2" that i've only used 44 special ammo when shooting it and love shoot it. I have also been thinking about adding Ruger GP 100 .44 Special to my collection black/blue 4"

I don't think anybody ever compiled a list of the early ones.

My second sample, the one I kept, is Serial 178-440XX.
Chambers corrected, front dovetail much better.

Ruger still left a very slight amount of daylight under the blade, but nowhere near as much.

If it was after mine, I'd say chances are in your favor. :)

my .44 special is a four inch S&W 624, it took me two years to weasel from a friend. it was well worth the begging and crying it took to get him to pity me.

I'm really considering one of the 5" models for a new whitetail handgun.

Annyone have experience with 44 specials and deer hunting?

There's an article on .44 Special in the 2018 Gun Digest that mentions using it for deer and antelope, with photos of those critters taken with them.

I often carry a Classic Bulldog on the farm. Last winter I used it to take a deer at 40 yards. The 5” Ruger will do a better job since it can carry a heavier load and the longer barrel will give more velocity. Get one and let us know how you like it.
