Grab and go gun

This is one of those topics that come up over and over again and every time it does someone makes a comment to the effect of "I can't imagine being so fearful that I feel the need to carry a gun in my home.". They then go on to tell us they have multiple guns stashed all over their house. Wait, what?

I don't always carry at home because I'm not always dressed to carry. I'm currently sitting on my couch in gym shorts and a T Shirt and my Glock 26 is sitting on the coffee table. If I move to a different part of the house it goes with me. If I'm wearing clothes that will support a gun then I wear a gun.

I read a blog by Tamara Keel once that says (paraphrased) " It's not so much that I carry a gun at home as it is that I simply carry a gun." I carry at home 1% for "just in case" and 99% because if I have to take the dogs out or SWMBO sends me to Walmart I don't have to stop and put my gun on.

On a side note I also don't specifically answer my door armed. If I'm concerned enough about who's on the other side of that door that I won't open it without a gun in my hand I just don't open the door.

Right now I am enjoying my Q4. If in a time crunch, my PPS is much easier to put in a holster, on a belt, and out the door.

I decided to live where the only people I see are either related to me, or I have planned on their arrival.

I tried having a "grab and go" gun that was of a lesser grade of firepower than normal because I was "just going to go" do whatever that shouldn't be dangerous or pose a threat.

That's the only time I ever felt undergunned. So I got away from that.

I do, however, see value in possibly having such an option as a BUG. I had an experience recently that made me consider this even more strongly than before.

Some might even say that my EDC of choice is inadequate in their view. That's a decision everybody has to make for themselves. It's all relative and a very personal/individual judgement call. At the end of the day - you're the one that has to live (or die) with it.

Not exactly grab and go, my P32 is simply on me whenever I'm clothed. Normally, it serves as BUG, but even if I rush out of the house without my primary, like early in the morning, I'm still armed with that.

I did that too, for a time.

Then it occurred to me that what I might need in the event is completely unrelated to the probability that existed before the fact that the event would occur.

Frankly, that should have been obvious.

Yes, and it should be an informed decision.

It’s not a matter of WHERE I’m going that dictates my choice of carry, it’s WHAT I’m wearing that dictates my choice of carry.

Use to have a S&W Model 38 that was my Grab and Go gun for going to the convenient store for milk and bread or for taking along when I took the dog for a late night walk. Nowadays it's a S&W Model 638 or else a Kahr CM9.

Jehova's Witnesses but I don't get them too much anymore because I know the Bible better than they do and I mess up their theology.

Yeah, us pesky well-read Christians.

More and more, I find the snubbie with two rounds of ratshot is a great G&G. Handles snakes and critters, which is far more likely than any real human threat.

Never have understood the concept of taking a little, low-capacity gun to run down to the corner store. Never carried a gun because it was convenient.

Where I've lived, the businesses that fall victim the most often to armed robberies are … the corner store. Worked at a gas station when I was seventeen, was robbed at gunpoint three times one summer.

And for walking the dog down the street? A year ago, on my road, an angry pit bull got loose from fenced property a ways from mine while I was walking one of the shepherds, tried to attack her … Didn't come to it (owner frantically chased his dog down and corralled him) but I was happy I had 18 rounds of fast-movin' JHPs ready.

Old Dog brings up a good point. They call convenience stores "Stop &Robs" for a reason.

I am in Colorado Springs. As I type this it is just after midnight. I promise you that by 4AM there will have been at least 3 convenience store robberies. Sometimes the robber will pick a street and go down it robbing them one after the other.

I quit shopping in convenience stores (except for gas) probably 20 years ago but that was more to save money than mitigate my risk.

Having said all that, I only have one gun that isn't 9 mm and it's a 40 Smith & Wesson so I'm not going to be carrying a sub caliber gun anyway but if I was 7-Eleven would not be the place

I always have an LCP in my right hip pocket in the OEM Holster..

I usually add a .45 Shield or M&P M2.0 Compact 4" .40 S&W to that but sometimes I get lazy.

I haven't found a small light gun in a reasonable caliber that's fun to shoot.
If you can pull it off with your mode of dress a S&W M442 with .38 Wadcutters likely comes the closest.

One thing I've noticed is the people who have actually had to defend themselves don't get lazy
