Green Dot

I'm still learning, I've got a lot of books, but can only read so fast.

I've been using green dot for 12ga for a while now.

I read online, while looking at loads, that green dot is a good powder to load several different pistol rounds as well. Including 9mm, .45acp, and .38 special.

I haven't found anything in the books yet to verify that, but if it's true, that would be great.


If it's not accurate, what would be a good powder for .45acp and 9mm?

I tested Green Dot in a 38 Special with 125 grain lead bullets, and with 125 JHP's.

It did not do well with the lead, did fine with the JHP.

I think the burn rate of Green Dot is in between Bullseye and Unique.

Bullseye is an outstanding powder for the 45 ACP, and was the powder the cartridge was first loaded with back in 1910.

I have shot case loads of 158 Lead, 3.5 grains Bullseye, any primer, any case in the 38 Spl. This load shoots to point of aim in old fixed sight revolvers and is outstandingly accurate.

I do have a 9mm load with Bullseye.

Unique is the most flexible pistol powder on the market.

I have no doubt that good accurate loads can be developed with Green Dot. But there is so much data on and excellent experiences with Bullseye and Unique, few people bother with Green Dot.

You can certainly use Green Dot in all those pistol cartridges. It's in the right speed range for the middle to heavy 9mm. This was just discussed here last week. Do a search on "Green Dot" and read.

Also call Alliant, they can certainly tell you. There are no loads listed in the popular reloading manuals, but that doesn't mean it's a "bad" powder.

I had some Green Dot cheap once.
Green Dot is just ok in .45 ACP, but very good in 9mm P. I did not try it in .38 Special.
I have a hard time telling differences in accuracy with different pistol powders loaded to the same velocity with the same bullet and shot handheld. If you got it, use it.

Green dot seems to be the red headed step child of the powders. I load 12 and 16ga ,9mm,38spec and 45acp. They all shoot very well and are a lot cleaner than red dot in shotguns also (much) cleaner in hand guns than Bullseye.

It would sure be nice to be able to find more load data on .38spec though in greendot.

I find it to be more accurate than I am capable of in handguns. pt92,gp100 4",S&W 686 4" lazer cast 158 lswc and pt1911 shooting 230 rainiers.

And all with only one powder. As they say "It don,t get no gooder than that"

Been using it in shotgun for probably25 or 30 years.
