I had the chrony out today and thought I'd list some the the averages I got in my recent 3-inch SP101 purchase. All are 125gr JHP loads except the Federal Hydra-Shock listed.
These are averages of 10-shot strings-
Winchester Super-X 125gr JHP--1,323fps
Cor-Bon 125gr JHP--1,452fps
Federal Hi-Shock 125gr JHP--1,286fps
Speer Gold-Dot 125gr. JHP--1,321fps
Federal Personal Defense 130gr JHP--1,367fps
Remington Golden Sabre 125gr JHP--1,881fps***
***I wouldn't trust the numbers of the Golden-Sabers. My machine kept reading "error" and only 4 shots were picked up. They were also really widespread(1,995, 1,911, 1,830, 1,790). With the recoil feeling around the same as the other loads tested, I know they couldn't have been traveling at nearly 2,000fps. I can't explain why I had so much trouble getting readings on these. All other loads tested nicely.
I find the Speer Gold-Dots to be real miserable to shoot, sending copper particles all around the areas of the cylinder-gap and muzzle.
The Cor-Bon had the most consistant velocities and showed really good performance, I thought, with the short 3" barrel of the SP101. The recoil was also quite managable.
I'm currently using the 125gr Federal Hi-Shocks(not Hydra) because it's proven to be the most accurate in this gun. I found out today it's also the slowest of the loads I have on hand. This might be were the extra accuracy comes from(recoil head games).
FWIW-All loads proved to be angle-of-terrorist accurate at the 25yds I've been firing at. I wouldn't hesitate using any of them on a regular basis, excepting the Gold-Dots, which seem to sprays shavings all over the place. This seems odd, since I never had this problem in the .38spl Gold-Dot loadings I'd previously fired in my S&W snub.
