Both hip and pommel holsters are somewhere out there for this pistol, but I cannot find anything suitable, outside of the cheaply made US / CS model Civil War knockoff reverse grip models.

A few points to consider first -

Hip holster wearer: Left Handed
Holster Style desired: Crossdraw w hammer strap
Height: 6'
Weight: 180 lbs.
Waistline: 34 inches
Build: Medium-ish
Breed: Georgia Redneck

Pommel holster wearer: Ambidextrious
Holster to Saddle Style desired: Western Pommel, left side gun, storage on right for flask, caps and balls
Height: > 16.5 hands
Weight: > 1500 lbs.
Waistline: He ain't saying
Build: Very, Very Heavy
Breed: ex-wife (har); Percheron Gelding

Impression I am trying to give: Redneck with large BP revolver on large horse

Your experiences very much appreciated with locating a good set of holsters for this model pistol.

Thanks for the referral to BigBadGun, I'll follow up with him and see what can be done to get my Dragoon gat around my person and horse.

Hope I have enough waist to hold it and my britches up. I know the horse does.

The key to a good holster for the Colt horse pistols is a good, heavy belt. A Dragoon or Walker will eat a the typical thin cowhide belt alive. I highly recommend a very thick cowhide or better yet a horsehide leather for your belt material.

That's funny you mention that Mykeal. That was one of the first things mentioned in our exchanges so far. Great minds, and all that. :neener:

Not a great mind on my part: the school of hard knocks. I have purchased too many 'inexpensive' holsters that lasted a week, and then heavy duty holsters that ruined a belt in even less time.

check out big bad guns. take a look at the walker club near the end you will see his post and his website you can also pm him. he does very good quality work. he made a very good holster for my Walker. he made voodoochile a very nice rig for his gun too. one of the best i have seen.

Thanks scrat, already in touch with him. Sounds like he makes some nice gun leather accessories and isn't afraid of anything. This many recommendations from people who actually have personal experience with him and his work sounds exactly like someone who can make what I am looking for.

At this point I have only the vaguest idea of what I want, so we're still tossing ideas back and forth. From his messages he seems extremely competent, and I'm pretty comfortable with him. Florida boy too, which isn't all bad, even if their college football teams are the cheatin'est in the SEC and ACC. But I digress . . .

Some things are better left unsaid. This is gonna be one of them I think.

My daughter hasn't told him he's not supposed to be a jumper either . . .

Guys thank you very much for all the kind words you are all great thats why I cater to the bp guys great bunch of guys.
Gin I am gonna be out of town for the next few days let me get with you on tuesday that is also gonna give me a few days to come up with some ideas.

Here is an original outfit sold at auction. I forget the web site I copied this from. I copied it because there was an ongoing discussion of whether anyone really ever carried a flask on their belt. This holster is for a dragoon, but they are basically the same wieght and size...BIG...:what:
