I wanted a gun log and range/shooting log for my iPhone. Several months ago I searched for such an app and couldn't find anything that met my needs. (Since that time there have been a few come out.) So, I wrote my own and have been using it since late April. I decided to bite the bullet and put it on the app store.

The icon I made is an actual picture of one of my Hi-Powers and a 30.06 round.

I hate typing on the iPhone so I made "pickers" to list common things such as make, caliber, failure type, firing method, firing stance, etc.

I don’t have (or want) an iphone. But if I did have one, with all the tracking capabilities, third party access and security holes, I sure wouldn’t want my firearms info on it.

Pretty cool, but I don't think I would buy it. I can track that stuff easily enough myself.

Add something similar to On Target, and I would be all over that. I think I'd pay 5 or 10 bucks for something like that.

It was a good exercise in combining two things I do which are shoot and program computers. Probably the most rewarding task I have done because I didn't have some one else telling me it should "look like this here" and "do that there", it does what I wanted.

I started to post it as a free app, but I wanted to "bind" myself to it a bit more. When someone pays for the app I will feel connected to their input and cause me to fire up the compiler and get to work. With the cost of the hardware, developer tools, time, business licensing, and related expenditures I will never come close to breaking even.

My initial focus was to capture failures. I can save the paper target easy enough, I write the date, the ammo, the gun, and other info on the target. I typically keep the really good groups and the really awful.

I wanted to be able to store failures, which one gun was giving me fits. That way I could then try to diagnose the problem. For instance, it only happens with hollow points less than 100 grains, stuff like that.

As for security there are always concerns. I don't actually store the serial number myself, its there if you want it. I intentionally did not use the location manager and store longitude and latitude.

Another thing is I like to trade guns a bit, so the purchase info is handy to have. I tend to increase numbers as time passes, so a gun I thought I bought for $900 only cost $830... my stupid brain.

If the app is helpful for some shooters out there, then goal met.

I went ahead and downloaded it... there are some minor bugs, not saving some data(rounds fired), having to reenter data upon filling in next block.. but overall I see a useful tool... no, I don't put in serial #.

Thank you for trying it out. I think I figured out the rounds fired disappearing bug. If you tap rounds fired and enter a number and then tap rating, without dismissing the keyboard by pressing the "Done" button in the top right, the rating picker comes up and when you dismiss the ratings picker the rounds fired is reselected. Just tap the done button before dismissing the keypad for rounds fired. I will work on some code to handle a stack of pickers.

I added some tutorials so that people could know a bit better what the app does. I will add some more tutorials later, but I have to change the oil in my car, fix a sprinkler head, and go to a wedding.

I just finished online tutorials of every feature of the Gun Log iPhone app.

That way know one will have to wonder what the app does. I didn't make the app to trick people into spending money. But if they find it useful then I think they should enjoy using it.

I even made a video so those without iPhones can see the app I developed.

I'd really like to see this as an iPad compatible app. Idk how hard that is to change, but I think that you might get some interest in it if you made it compatible.

I will have my iPad in a couple of weeks. Then I can fully proceed in that area.

Too high tech for me, I'm a luddite! But I have kept a journal (on paper) of every range trip, the people I shot with, guns fired, round count, weather, etc. since 1998. It's cool to look back occasionally, some of my old shooting buddies have gone on to that shooting range in the sky, brings back good memories.

iPad is on the way. I have been tracking the shipment. Looks like it is now in Alaska after being hauled all over China and Hong Kong.

If you have bought the app, I ask a favor...

Someone did a "one star" review of the app by mistake. It is a mistake because the features mentioned are not features of Gun Log. If you click the reviewer's name link to see the other reviews you will see where he had reviewed a different range log application which does advertise the features that are complained that do not work. An honest mistake. But "one star" sure wipes out the Gun Log. Bad luck for me.

So, if you haven't reviewed the app, please do so. If you give it one star that is fine, just make sure you are giving one star to the right app! :)

EDIT:

Just checked again, Apple pulled the one star rating! Whew. If I get one star I want to earn it for myself, not because of a mistake.

Just released Gun Log version 2.5

The Gun Log Blog specifies the release details.

What's New in Version 2.5

Bullet Drop Estimator. In a Firing Set or from a Report the bullet drop can be estimated. In a weapon's configuration specify the sight height in inches above the bore axis and the zero range in yards. In the ammo's details specify the ballistic coefficient (typically a number between .2 and 1.0) and the muzzle velocity. With that data a "drop table" can be calculated that estimates the bullet's vertical position and time of flight. The calculations are based on the G1 ballistic coefficient with the standard assumptions of sea level and other variables.

Gun Log 3.0 for iPad

Just finished up the Universal app which means it now runs on iPad as well as iPod touch and iPhone. While I was at it I made the app respond to orientation changes as well. This is handy on the iPad. On the iPhone portrait is the best orientation in my opinion.

Since the app doesn't export your data in any manner you can not share the data between two devices running the app. Sorry, but it is a trade off.

Gun Log 3.1 available

I changed the "target picture view". Just to much scrolling inside of scrolling. Cleaned it up and got the zoom working better as well. This was a quick update. I am well into version 3.2 already.

I want to thank all of the early adopters. I would not have been so involved if I hadn't charged for it. For $0.99 I think it does a lot. I am toying with getting the next round of features added and increasing the price and slow down the development cycle, fewer releases going forward.

I could try out a free version and put advertising in it, but I hate apps with advertising, so I think my efforts would be better spent on other projects and going to the range in the evenings instead of the keyboard.

Or the users group: (which gets no traffic as of yet)

Maybe one of the big stores, or gun rights group, or accessories manufacturer, or even a gun manufacturer would want to dress up a version and we could work out an arrangement to put it out for free or something.

I am always open to feature ideas and ways to get the app to those that are interested. Remember, I wrote this for me to begin with.

Thanks.

I want to let you all know of a Gun Log related blog:

Gun App Reviews
http://gunappreviews.blogspot.com/

Of course I am biased, I wrote Gun Log and Gun Log +P, and try as I may my affinity to Gun Log will always be there.

With that said, I do not bash and I do not focus on the negative.

I try to take screen shots of every screen in the apps. I do this because the app store only shows you four screen shots. So regardless of my comments, I think the screen shots will be helpful.
