i prefer pen and paper. easier for me to do (i would not have to spend weeks trying to learn how to use a smart phone) and much, much cheaper. more permanent as well.

Cheaper, yes. Permanent? Nah, I'd give that edge to computers. Papers get lost or destroyed way too easily. Recently doing some genealogical research I ran into the problem of various paper records being destroyed by fires or floods over the years. Not only that, but every photograph I can find from more than 30-40 years back is a mess, often with creases everywhere and pieces missing. It was a stark reminder of the drawbacks of single-copy physical records.

Put it on the computer, and not only is it indexed and searchable but its also infinitely copyable. My personal documents on my computer for example get indexed every other night via a Linux cron job. I can search instantly based on name or file contents. That directory is also synced to a Dropbox account, so its available at several locations that are synced as well as backed up in case of destruction of my computer. In the case of photographs, they also suffer absolutely no time-based degredation. They will look the same - down to the last pixel - in 50 years as they day they were saved.

Put it this way: I'm 30 years old now, and still have the digital file copy of every school paper I wrote since the 8th grade. Think I'd still have the paper copies of such? :)

I just got a message from a valued user that the update crashed and lost his data.
Of course I am freaking out over this. It seems that the Apple App store is having issues.

I posted immediately to the support site:
http://gunlogapp.blogspot.com/2012/07/gun-log-51-release.html

From CNET:
"We are aware of the issue related to apps crashing after update. We are currently working on resolving the issue. Stay tuned for updates."

In addition to this statement, Apple has contacted developers by e-mail to notify them that should customers have crashing problems, they can be instructed to contact Apple, which will then determine if the problem is its fault or from a bug in the program:

If a customer reports receiving an error when downloading your app from the App Store, he or she can receive direct help from the iTunes Store Customer Support team: http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/

If the iTunes Store Customer Support team determines that the issue lies with your app and not with the App Store or the customer's account, Apple will contact you to resolve this issue.

Please let us know if you need additional assistance regarding your app.

I got this message from Apple Support:

Thank you for contacting App Store Developer Support regarding the App Store.

We appreciate your report of the issue you have experienced with your app and the App Store. Please know that the iTunes team is aware of the issue and is working to correct the problem as soon as possible.

Thank you for your patience as we work to resolve this issue.

I am sorry. If you have any issue contact me.

p.s.

If you are not having issues, please contact me. I do not know how wide spread is the problem.

I have an, "Android," issue. Can you port it?
I never have time to finish my Android version. I have all the tools, everything needed, the database designed, etc. I just never get the time to finish it. There are gun tracking apps available on Android. As a matter of fact, an online friend of mine from my good home state of Kentucky has such an app, called Gun Tracker Pro. One day I will compete with his app, but that is not today.

Apple has fixed the problem and all apps that were affected by the issue will show up in the App store with an "update" available. I know for certain Gun Log was affected because all of my devices show an update pending for Gun Log.

Please backup your data. This time the issue may have been Apple's mistake, the next time it could be mine.

Apple Says It Has Fixed Server Bug That Led to Crashing Apps

“We had a temporary issue that began yesterday with a server that generated DRM code for some apps being downloaded,” Apple said in a statement to AllThingsD.

If Gun Log 5.1 crashes on launch after the update, do not delete the app. Check and see if there is another update available. Also, if you have backed up the database, secure that backup. If you don't have a backup, and have not deleted the app to reinstall it, the data is still there, so do a backup as described below.

Here are some more links concerning the issue:

I apologize to the users that are effected by this situation. If you do not have backups of your data then the data is lost.

Fair enough. I was hoping to support a fellow High Roader. His friend will do well enough I suppose. A while ago I thought I wanted to program for Android. Turns out I really didn't want to learn another language that badly.

Gun Log 5.2 is out. You can sort ammo by purpose, you can save a ballistic info record with notes for hold overs and such so you can quickly calculate bullet drop.

Time to work on Gun Log +P. Gun Log is truly the most feature rich and popular gun inventory and range log for the past 8 months on iPad!

Thank you all for supporting the app, which supports my ammo and weapon related purchases.

Again, thank you to the forum admin for giving me permission to talk about this app.

paper has its advantages, and disadvantages... admittedly, so do electronics. take your pick but don't bash the man who's trying to help you. he doesn't know you. Nor, you him. why not take the high road and hope that everyone finds a solution instead of bashing someone else's efforts???

Down at the malwart now they are selling composition books for fiddy cents each. I think each store got a trainload.

Wow, I had no idea that my app had caused such a thing, people aren't buying note pads and the price has plummeted.

Thank you. If someone wants to track their rounds fired by a notch in their stock for every 100 rounds, that is good too. It's all good.

Just updated both apps, Gun Log and Gun Log +P.
GL+P is now up to date using the same database as GL plus all of the new features.

I appreciate the moderators permission to give notices concerning the app. Thank you to "The High Road".

Just wanted everyone to know that there is about to be a new release of Gun Log SPC. It is in review and hopefully be approved soon. 6.0 will have expense reports, which can tell you what you have spent on firearms, accessories, and ammo. It also tallies up the cost of ammo during a range session.

So now your ol lady can hijack your phone for three minutes and your busted. That time she thought you were seeing another woman was actually at the range. The 1,000 dollar ring you gave her was actually 500 and a case of ammo. The gun that you have had.for."years" shows up as purchased last week. Trouble with a T.

Exactly why users had me put a passcode on the app. You set it in the Settings App on the device, just look for Gun Log SPC under the listed settings.

Then she can't tell what you purchased or how much you spent! :)

Too bad the "ol lady" doesn't support such an honorable past-time.

The most secure 'gun log', goes to the folks with photographic memories.
The second, is good old pen and ink, in your own handwriting, in a bound book, on your shelf, maybe less discernable than the other books on your shelves.
If its electronic, it can be hacked.

You are absolutely correct. Any device can be hacked. Gun log is a range log. As users made feature requests it became somewhat of an inventory app. No field for data input is required. I have never entered the serial number, why, because I use this as a range log. I can quickly see which ammo groups best, I can quickly generate a drop table with the external ballistics calculator to help "get on paper" or look up an elevation hold over.

It also tracks failures. I can quickly see which things are common with failures. Is it happening more with a certain ammo? Maybe a magazine is involved?

It also tracks precision and accuracy. I can quickly see which ammo gives the tightest groups.

Yes, the app has many inventory features. Users wanted photos of their guns. I thought, really? You don't know what your gun looks like? Then they wanted multiple photos! What ever, since I have code for taking photos of the targets it wasn't that hard, but I really didn't see the need. But, I like to be helpful too.

Depends on what type of security you want. Security from other people finding out? Debatable. Information that's stored with a sufficiently strong encryption algorithm with a sufficiently complex password is orders of magnitude more safe than any pen and paper copy of the data.

If you're talking about secure from loss then its not even a contest. Digital data is easily transferred to offsite locations on a simple and automated schedule. Paper data can be transferred off-site but it requires physical and intentional duplication efforts for each copy, that have to be repeated as the data is updated. The level of effort involved means that very few copies of paper documents ever had that level of backup applied.

Sirgilligan-I had the gun log+p (I think, it was the one that backed up to the cloud) downloaded on my ipad and my old iphone. I recently changed jobs and therefore phones. On my new iphone I cant find the app that I had. All the other apps show up in ITunes and all I have to do is hit install, but I can't even find the gun log app that I had. I backed it up in hopes that all I would have to do is reinstall and it would have all my information. Did I assume too much, or am I just doing something wrong? Feel free to PM me if you dont want to answer here. Hope you can help. Thanks!

Just email skunkworkssoftware at yahoo and I will help you out.
Gun Log +P is currently not for sale. Your purchased apps should show up in the app store, so go to the app store on your device and go to your purchased apps and it should be available to download.

Thank you for the tip. Found it. I may still email you if I cant get my old information to show up. Thanks again. Great app.

Geeze. I have had this for a while and have not updated it. My last two gun purchases are not even in it :) I will have to check out the new features. I haev the +p version on my ipad.
