My ex-girlfriend kicked me out in January 2013. It took me a little bit to find a new place and just now realized that she still has my rifle. Can I get into trouble for that as it is now August 2013?

There's just too many variables in this scenario/question to possibly begin answering it. In some cases your state and local laws might even come into play, so we can't answer that without significantly more information. Then you've got.. well, whether she's legally able to possess it. Of course what she may have done with it is a factor. The list just goes on and on of what we couldn't possibly know to establish any well-reasoned answer with.

Sorry, I am in Illinois and she is too. I know that she does not have a FOID card.

i'm assuming you're not on good speaking terms with her, otherwise this should be a moot point (call her up, say "hey, I need to pick up my rifle." she lets you do so, you leave.) if she is unwilling to take a simple phone call to handle this situation then my SUGGESTIONS would be as follows...
1) send a certified return receipt requested letter to her stating your request to claim your property in her possession. failure of her response would require you to take action #2...
2) contact the police in her area and CALMLY explain the situation, stating that the firearm was stored safely at her residence until you had obtained a secure location for yourself. (assuming such actions are legal in IL. I know I can do that in NJ.)

Might be easier if the both of you got back together.
Too funny.

It is your rifle, correct? Call her up and get your property. She sold it? File a police report.

As I understand it, "dropping the dime" (BTW, phone calls now cost $.50, if you can find a pay phone) on her, could result in big trouble for you. By leaving the gun at her place, you effectively transferred it to a person without an FOID, and that is illegal. Better do everything possible to get the rifle back without involving the law.

Prison Planet. Everyone is a criminal at some point in our society. And able to lose 2nd Amendment rights. Flowers, Money, Wine, whatever be nice, ask nice and get your stuff back. Legally the easiest for everyone. You want to be a felon? If needs be take her new boyfriend out for a beer.

NOT THE TIME FOR GETTING IN THE LAST WORD.
