Will be vacationing there this summer and would like to get some range time in with the family. Looks like the nearest public range is about 2.5 hours away at the Outer Banks Gun Club in Manns Harbor, NC. Anyone aware of something closer?

ocracoke is an island bud

go to howards pub and then pick and entire day for a range trip.

there are a few ranges in the area but they are all atleast 2 hours that i know of

ninja i think there is one in greenville.

im from new bern, there is one in Havelock and then another some where in craven county, its the law enforcement gun range or something like that but anyone can shoot there so ive been told.

I lived on the Outerbanks for 3 years. The only gunrange when I was there was on the navy base in Buxton and that was just for handguns. That was so long ago I don't even know if they have a navy base anymore.

It is a National Seashore/Park area. Sort of unlikely they would install a gun range to upset the tourists.

I once over heard a lady ask the man on duty at the local museum on Ocracoke, " What is there to do here?" He replied " Not a whole lot, and that's the way we want to keep it." They do a lot of goose or duck hunting there and occasionally you'll see emptys where some one has gone out in a remote spot and blasted off some 30-06's or something. I wouldn't suggest the random shooting, they're kinda touchy about the National Seashore thing(the rangers). When I'm there for a week or so I settle for some air rifle practice out in the back yard or some dry fire with the match rifle. Try the Cafe Atlantic for dinner, you'll be spoiled. M

separate issue - anyone know the policy for guns on the NC ferry system? I imagine there must be some type of declaration, similar to air travel. I looked on their website, but didn't see anything.

There doesn't seem to be any issue transporting firearms on the ferry systems. They transport you on the ferry with you inside your vehicle so as long as you are carrying legally, it should not be an issue. Ocracoke is georgeous, btw.

i doubt the ferry has a policy on it. you just drive on so unless youve got it in plain sight it wont be an issue

No, AFAIK it's the same as a public highway, so guns in your trunk are fine.

Ocracoke is for fishing... Leave the guns at home (except for the ccw) and take the fishing rods.

Mmmmm best place on the east coast to lay back and enjoy, let some air outta ur tires and go fishing memorys

We used to own some lots there and went every year, the fishing truly spoiled me:D Make sure you hit the beach at night, the ghost crabs running up to your lantern are really cool! Some good places to snorkel in the warmer parts of the year and you can rent some clam rakes while your at it. Your post made me very nostalgic:p

Ocracoke is one of our favorite vacation hangouts. My mom spend every summer there as a kid. I can't think of any shooting places on the island and nothing is really close buy, I think your out of luck.

As for Greenville, NC the Pitt club is membership only and it is fairly expensive (range is a small part of it) and the Paridise is pretty reasonable but a decent drive. There is a nice range in Goldsboro and also an indoor range there. I shoot on private ranges in the area.

Don't remember the exact name, but it is off Spring Garden Road near the Warehouser plant. You have to have an LEO sponsor you, the cost is something like $50 per year. And you have to participate in at least one or two maintenance events a year, from what I've heard.
