hey guys, as i increase my inventory of guns and valuables, and having a new baby in the house, i am in need of a gun safe in the next few months. my budget is gonna be somewhere around $1000. I have done measuring on where i want it in the house. my space to place it is about 36 inches wide, and 20 inches deep, the height is not an issue as it will be against an 8 ft. wall. i think this will put me in the size of about a 24 gun safe. Share some info with me here and let me know what you guys think. thanks in advance........hvychev77

I got, and am quite happy with, the Winchester 24-gun (figure more like 16) safe (er, RSC), from Tractor Supply. They go on sale for $100 off of $700 from time-to-time, though I just missed the last sale before I got mine. Electronic lock, 509 lbs empty. Does the job just fine, and the quality of the carpeted/adjustable interior is also just fine. Good luck!

I was just looking at Tractor Supply website and looks like the Winchester model (24gun) on sale for 594.99. shows exterior width 30in. exterior depth 22in. hope this helps.

Gun manufacturers do not make safes. They are rebranded.

Things to look for are this:

Does it have a fire rating? How many minutes? California wildfires take longer to put out than Ohio home fires.
Does it have a door lining expandable strip that grows with heat to seal out smoke, and the fireman's water damage?
Is it larger than your current needs? It should be. We all like large families.
If needed, can you get into it quickly? (Or do you need a different, smaller safe to keep a handgun?)
Does it need to be dehumidified? Garages are bad for your firearms.
Can you hide your combination from friends when they are standing around you showing off your collection?

Just a few thoughts.

Also, put your safe on the left hand wall - there's no leverage. It eliminates crow bar attempts as almost all safes open from your left. No one can stand to the left and pry with a wall in the way.
