gun safety material for homeschoolers

Is there any reputable materials that are aimed, pardon the pun, at school age kids that homeschooling parents have successfully incorporated?

Yes, I realize a thoughtful parents can teach one on one, but I'm asking about formal material here. I've heard something about Eddie the Eagle in the past, does that still exist or was it limited to "don't touch.. tell an adult" type deal.

I'm looking for something to further ingrain the 4 rules and to use as a springboard for practical skills as they age.

Eddie Eagle material from the NRA - tried to work some of it into my lesson plans when I taught first grade

Eddie Eagle was the first thing to come to mind. As much as I hate to say this, the California handbook for the Handgun Safety Certificate is pretty nicely done. Also, for homeschooling older kids, a field trip to go through hunter safety isn't a bad idea.

Sign up your child at the NRA website under programs then under training. There is all sorts of training under the basic instruction courses. You can find a local instructor in your area to give a class or see listed dates and classed for firearm safety and training. NRA.org then programs then education/training. Good luck

1. Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
2. Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
3. Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.

These are the core rules of the NRA firearms safety and education program. All first time firearms handlers need to know these before shooting for safety.

Eddie Eagle would be my first thought. Although your State Hunter's Education Course might be a good idea as well. Firearm safety is the first thing that Hunter's Ed teaches.

I don't know how old your kids are, but consider a Basic Pistol Course from an NRA Instructor. Again, basic safety and firearm handling are the first things taught.

You might also check with the local youth firearms safety programs for program material. The youth firearm safety course's are generaly manditory in order to get hunting license and there are always local instructor driven programs. The state usualy provides program information and sometimes that is drawn from the interenet - check with your states DNR .

Not sure if it is what your looking for. I put my kid though the local hunter safety course and learned a little myself, by sitting in it with him. He has also went through a couple programs with his boy scout troop.

All of the Eddie Eagle stuff I've seen was "don't touch" stuff. Frankly, I'd expect that to be as counterproductive as abstinence instruction in high school. Hands-on instruction with Airsoft guns will get the message across most effectively, and once they're absolutely reliable on the safety rules you can progress to .22s.
