Wow. I have to start shopping at some of the gun stores that you guys are shopping at with the 10% markup. Everywhere I've been its at least 100 bucks over the going "fair" price.
As far as proving myself to a shop, well yes and no. If its a shop full of self proclaimed 1000yd experts with the requisite tigerstripe BDUs and anti UN stickers on the wall then they can pound sand. Furthermore if some guy has a plain jane springfield GI in the case for close to 600 bucks then me asking him if he would knock off 100 bucks for cash and carry isn't trying to ask for a good deal.
However if its a nice shop with knowledgable people who know when to leave politics/social statements at the door (almost impossible to find these days) with fair prices, then a first time shopper probably shouldn't expect anything.
Of course its all a matter of perspective. I make that statement however with the caveat that a huge majority of gun shops are ones that overcharge and staff people who barely know the barrel from the stock.
