I'm about to buy a new gun and I'm having to decide between a few options.

Before the boating accident, this is what I already had:
2 .22lr rifles (one pump, one semi)
7mm mag bolt gun
6mmAI bolt gun
AR in .223
.38 special revolver
Small, cheap 9mm semi auto

Here is the top 3 from my wish list:
Browning buckmark
Glock 19
.300 blk upper for AR

I'm pretty well covered in hunting weapons. I am wanting something fun to shoot, mainly for targets. Both of my current handguns are from a company with a spotty reputation. I'd like a nicer pistol. Just started getting hogs on our place so the .300blk would come in handy for quick shooting. What would you guys do if you had around $500 to spend?

I'd get the 300 BLK if it was an SBR or you intended to build one. 8-10 inches is really ideal in that platform. $300 for an upper ( or less ) and $200 for a stamp and you are in it less than the cost of a top of the line buckmark ( mine was $560 ) or a Glock 19.

A nice 22lr AR15. Cheap and fun. Add a bump-stock later for "simuated" full-auto goodness....and a supresser as money allows :)

A fully supressed full-auto AR is a good day.

Blk out

Owned 2 with 180 & 200 gr , 44 mag power with precision!

If you go for the Buckmark, get a sackful of extra magazines! You're gonna want lots of 'em.

I second the 300 blackout. My good buddy is a retired Army Ranger and he talked me into building one as a suppressed SBR (8.25" barrel). I was very skeptical at first. however he hammered into me all the positives of the platform and I finally acquiesced. He was correct in all aspects. It is a great platform and very versatile with both subs and supers. It is my go to rifle now and a fun firearm to shoot.

Prices of ammunition are dropping for it as it becomes more popular and if you reload you can cut the price down to about .46 cents a round (if you can get hold of the unobtainium powders for subs).

300 blackout is just the current popular caliber du jour for all the cool kids at the range, like 6.8spc or 6.5 Grendel, that honestly has no real purpose except for short barrel suppressed rifles. It's a total "MEH" as far as I'm concerned. IF you like it, knock yourself out and get one.

I'd go with a 22 like the Buckmark to work on your pistol shooting skills. Maybe a good CCW like the G19 if you need a good CCW pistol, but you can learn a lot more shooting 22s imho and everybody should have a good 22 pistol.

What, you don't own a lever action?

Everyone should have at least one. Take your $500 and get yourself a Rossi in .357 or .44 Mag, and enjoy your new hog hunting gun.

Ruger 1911 has been calling my name for awhile now. If only I could decide between full size and commander...

I've never shot a Buckmark, but given their popularity, I suspect that it's great fun. The problem is finding ammo.

It's easier to find 9mm around here, and the G19 is also a lot of fun to shoot.

If this is just for targets and you can find ammo, I'd go with the Buckmark. If there's a reasonable possibility that it will do double duty for carry or HD, G19.

I am going with the Buckmark, simply because I happen to like 22 target pistols. I suggest you get what you like.

What do you like to shoot more - handguns or rifles? (I'm not EVEN going to comment on the lack of shotguns):neener:

You have rifles for hogs - anyone of them will do the job, but if you reload, then the Blackout would be nice. Otherwise, I'd add a better 9mm, especially if you do not reload, or a nice big 357 to go with your 38, something you could scope and smack hogs with.

1) Browning Buckmark
2) Glock 19
3) .300BLK AR upper.

This would be the order I would go with.

Gotta go with the G19. .300 BLK is a fad cartridge and it's popularity will die off soon after the military switches to 6.8 Remington.

Thanks for responding. Historically, I enjoy rifle shooting more, but I'm starting to get into pistols lately. I like the price of 9mm and .22lr for targets.

A suppressed .22 with a red dot just looks like fun.

A glock 19 would make a good carry gun and fun for paper and steel as well.

I've worried about the .300blk ammo availability and it becoming scarce in the future. I do have other guns that would work for hogs.

Hmmm I'm still thinking

I wouldnt worry any more about the 300 than I would about .223. Its simple to cut down used almost free or free 5.56 brass and make 300BLK out of it. Then you are into just the cost of powder and 30 cal bullets. Best thing is you can use cast lead bullets all day long in it. Total load cost for most of what I shoot i.e. 200 grain hard cast coated subsonics is under 20 cents a round. Sure theres some setup costs involved with reloading but its much easier to reload the 300 BLK than even the 5.56. Sometimes you find good deals on factory loaded stuff i.e. nossler overruns for $12 a box and that stuff is loaded HOT.

Other than the totally unnecessary folding stock thing and the aimpoint (OK and the tax stamp ) I have about $450 total into this one. $59 barrel, $30 handguards, $69 BCG etc.

You said you are well stocked on hunting weapons so I'd make the 300 blk out third on the list. You said your two other pistols are from spotty companies. As such I'd get the Glock 19 first and the 22 second.
