So, having a bad case of Krag lust- or just C & R fever in general, I buy a sporterized Krag off gunbroker.

264.00 for the gun. 30 bucks shipping. I have three days after delivery to decide if I am keeping it and I am out the 30 bucks plus the return. The Krag can't be shot while I am inspecting it, nor disassembled.

I've never shot or probably even HELD a Krag before, so the learning curve is pretty steep. That said, it's obvious this one is a project.

1.The stock is sanded down so much the finger grooves are missing. No markings.

2. No magazine cut-off.

3. No rear sight and the holes are filled, I think with melted lead.

5. Civilian safety.

6. Wrong front band.

7. Sling swivels missing and replaced with studs.

8. Side plate has the back point chopped. Looks like they thought about a peep sight. Big wad of plastic wood filling in the stock below that. No holes drilled in receiver there.

9. Worn, (not strong), rifling.

10. Weaver side scope mount with no scope. One of the mount holes is drilled all the way through.

So....this is looking like a new short stock, (Boyds has them, and Ebay), plus buttplate, band and rear swivel.

Mag cut-off, side plate, safety.

Scope it or add rear sight.

It does function- I tested the firing pin with a dowel rod. Kicks it out. Headspace is unknown.

So this morning I need to make a decision. Lots of Krags going by on gunbroker on one hand...but I don't mind a project on the other. The barrel worries me but I have seen bad rifling shoot OK before.

Sounds like too much of a project to me. Were you planning on restoring it or refurbishing a bubba'd nightmare? You'll spend at least as much as you paid for the gun to try to restore it. If I were you, I'd cut my loses and return it. :(

I'd be sending it back....there's just too much wrong...Yeah, it'll cost ya, but unless you're really into "project guns" (I do a couple a year), its probably not worth the aggravation, even if it costs you.

Hit the Road.

I was a little torn, but I sent it back. It was a project gun. Cost me 45 bucks in shipping for this lesson, which was valuable. I know a lot more about Krag parts than I did. If it had a better barrel I would have gone for it.

Back to Krag shopping. Plenty of them flowing by.

Anyone used one of the Boyd Krag Carbine stocks as a replacement?

Blackfork, show us some pics and a range report on your new Krag!
You will love it, mine is one of my all time favorites to take to the range, accurate, and smooth as silk.:D
