Honest, I was just trying to find the upper limit on a guys proxy bid- I was just a dollar or two over him at 263.00....and he didn't come back and bid.

So now I am stuck with a Krag. It's not even the Krag I was WATCHING.

Ugly sporterized Krags need love, but I need to sit down somewhere cool and dark and collect my thoughts. I might need gun therapy.

This one has no rear sight and empty scope rings on it. I hope Midway has some ammo.

aslong as its not a REAL POS. i havnt seen a krag for that price around here.

they are nice rifles, and lets put it this way. "eh, iv done worse" :p

lets see some pics of this ugly duckling

Don't feel bad about your stupid mistake, you ended up with a nice piece of history. Some people make stupid mistakes and end up in car wrecks!

man, i don't know how many times i've wanted to do that. y'know...just to find out...

the temptation will always be there, but this makes me glad i never did. i can't afford to actually win most of them.

sorry, blackfork...i feel ya. like mattw says, it could be worse...

Contact the seller, maybe he would welcome the chance to make more than 263 for the gun.

The Kraig isn't as strong as the later bolt guns (springfields+Mausers) and on paper the standard load isn't terribly exciteing.
The couple of Kraigs I have handled (one normal and a couple of bubba units) had really wonderful smooth actions .
The thing with the 30/40 load being weak is kind of like the story on the 30/30. Looks poor on paper but over the years untold numbers of deer, elk, bears, and moose have fallen over dead if the hunter did his part. I don't recomend the 30/40 on the larger animals but it will work fine on deer.
Older gentleman at my gunclub has an old carbine that he got passed to him when he started hunting (50? years ago). Several years back he took it to the local smith and had a cheepy red dot mounted way down the barrel sort of scout like. Looks kind of funny (as the gentelman himself points out) but he still puts three deer a year in the freezer.
If you end up with this gun don't feel you have to dump a ton of money restoreing it,but do yourself a favor and get it shooting as they are great guns

I like the 30-40 cartridge, but..........

I am just a mite concerened over the strength of the rifles. Don' get me wrong I love their smoothness and character, but if I had one I'd use it as a cast bullet shooter. My 30-40 is built on a 98 Mauser action and has a Douglas barrel. It gobbles up very warm loads and I'm quite pleased with it. Another good platform is the Ruger No. 3. This old round shouldn't be allowed to die. Essex

She may not be the prettiest girl at the dance, or the most exciting, but I suspect as long as she hasn't been too buggered, you'll like the the way she feels when you lay hands on her;). Those krags are something special. I've got one bubbaded Norweigen in 6.5X55 (1922 $100 in a pawn shop) and a 30/40 that has been respectably well sporterized and it has family history (Step Dad). Those machined actions are a work of art in their own right and a joy to behold. I would like to rework the Swede sometime in the future using the NRA Gunsmithing Guide's flat magazine box conversion and a new barrel, probably never happen but I still love it.

Kragging

I'm sure I can find some ammo somewhere. Probably try and find a scope to go in the rings, zero it and put it in the doe-tag line. Last year I shot does with K31, Garand, M1 Carbine, Jap Type 44 carbine, 1909 Argentine. I guess it will fit in there somewhere.

Could put it in the safe of one of the Juniors that is now in the AMU and let him sort it out in the next 20 years and go back to looking.

Lots of Krags going by below the 300.00 range on Auction Arms and Gunbroker.
