This isn't going to help things out. I'm guessing the local TV stations will all be claiming Denver is awash in ultra cheap firearms and the local newspaper (it really is only one paper with two mouths, both lying) will also be demanding "something" be done.

And expect the usual cretins in power to call for the overturn of Shall Issue, expanding the Denver ban on assault weapons to the entire state and Boulder to try to secede from the state in order to declare themselves off limits to those who have guns.

Not one of them is willing to answer the question "What would have happened if one or more of the workers inside were permitted to carry on the job?"

You can bet that Safeway had a policy of "no weapons, even if you are legally allowed to" on their property for employees. Since the workers needed their jobs they went unarmed.

DENVER (AP) - A gunman opened fire Sunday afternoon at a Safeway Inc. distribution center, killing one person and injuring five others, including a police officer, before the shooter was killed.

Several fires were burning inside the estimated 1.3 million-square-foot building near Interstate 70, said Denver Fire Chief Larry Trujillo.

Safeway worker Jesus Lopez told KMGH-TV he was about 20 feet away from the gunman. "He was just shooting and lighting fires. He wanted to turn the building on fire," Lopez said. "I just ran. Everybody just ran out."

About 60 people who evacuated the building were waiting in two buses to hear whether they could re-enter the building, Regional Transportation District spokesman Scott Reed said.

"I've never been through anything like this," said meat department employee Scott Stroman, in his second week on the job. He said the gunshots sounded like faint popping sounds from another part of the building.

"Other employees came running up and said 'hey, let's get out of here,'" Stroman said. Officers were already on the scene when he got outside.

Two shooting victims were in critical condition; two were in serious condition, including the officer shot in the leg by the suspect; and one was in fair condition, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. None of the victims was identified.

Jackson could not immediately confirm whether officers shot the suspect or whether he committed suicide. He also would not identify the suspect or say whether he worked for Safeway.

"We're not going to speculate who shot who at this time," Jackson said. "We are still clearing the building. We are still making sure everyone is safe."

Police believed the shooter was the only suspect but were treating the scene as if there could be others.

Safeway officials did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment.

Bet 1 - The shooter was not a CCW holder. Possibly wasn't legally allowed to own a firearm.

Bet 2 - The Safeway corporate insisted that their employees go unarmed at work. (Yeah, the guy who is intent on showing up and shooting everyone is really going to pause and think about it before carrying onto company property, right? Those rules in the employee handbook are like unbreakable, even for the mentally unstable.)

Bet 3 - The Democrat running for Governor will declare an intent to overturn Shall Issue. Side Bet - Bob Beauprez, still trying to play both sides, won't bring up the fact that if the people in the building had been allowed their rights under law and exercised them this guy probably would have been stopped a lot sooner. Current governor Owens won't bring it up, either.

Denver, generally, has more restrictive gun laws than the rest of Colorado. Lot of good it did.

Yes, it fits the agenda to trumpet these. It's against the agenda to give equal press to accounts where an armed civillian stops a crime from happening or ends the career of a lifelong criminal. Thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands, of other incidents never make it to the press when a criminal flees, no shots fired.

Today's edition plugs in a sidebar to the story, listing other workplace shootings. It lists six of them, going back to 2000. None of the other six are in Colorado. They weren't done by this shooter. Why list them? To raise fear and make it seem like everyone is in danger from those guns that run around and cause people to shoot them. I would bet that a story on a mine collapse wouldn't include stories of other mining disasters going back six years. I know that stories of homes that burn down don't list every home destroyed by fire in the nation going back six years. So why does THIS crime deserve that sidebar?

One telling comment appears in today's story of the event I posted above.

"It was coordinated very well. He shot at us, and we shot at him. I don't expect (officers) to negotiate when you get shot at."

The word "officers" is in parentheses, inserted by the newspaper. That's to clearly show the reader that COPS don't have to take being shot at. The message is clear. Only COPS get to shoot when shot at. You, average Joe Reader, shouldn't shoot. You shouldn't be armed. You should negotiate while someone tries to rob, rape, torture and or kill you.

I'll take a guess that Safeway, Inc., already has a "No Firearms" policy. Most large companies and corporatons do.

Perhaps if some employee had had a handgun with him/her, knew how to use it, and was determined, this might not have happened. (??)

Anyway, too bad about the innocent people who were hurt and the one killed.
