Guns and Ham Radio

Hey, just finished reading all 40 posts on the other section about radios. I was wondering, how many people on here have their license? I got my HF rig set up by my reloading bench in the garage so I can listen while I work. It seems that I can pick some expensive hobbies. I want guns and radios. How do you ballance it all? Really though just wondered cause it seems like a lot of people share both hobbies.

I got my license back in '94. I didn't get into it hard, so it was easy to let it slide by. I havn't been on the air in at least 5 years. My license expires in a year and a half, I'll prolly renew it in case the SHTF.

It is nice to know that if the power and phone are out for weeks you can still listen to what is going on in the world and tell others what is going on in your neighborhood, even if they are 5,000 miles away.

I'm N3STL, with a 2-meter ricebox for long x-country drives. Seems the cell phone has largly replaced what the ham radio once was.
Both my Dad (W7VIU?) and my oldest brother (W7YNO) are silent keys...

Had a 2-meter ICOM at the house back then and a Kenwood rig in the truck. But, I haven't been active in years. In fact I believe my license has lapsed.

I agree with jrhines in that, for me anyway, cell phone has pretty much replaced my 2-meter rigs.

Would like to have an HF rig though.

K8IFU since '57. CW about 99.44% of the time. Extra since 8 year old kids started getting it. Still don't believe they did it honestly. Mobile with 2 meters and 40CW, all bands at home

Licensed since '82, General class. Not very active at the moment but I feel an upsurge in interest. I'm looking at antenna ideas for HF.

Like someone said, I sure can pick 'em; guns/handloading, ham radio/SWL, computers, books and music. No wonder there's not much TV in there.

Only have handi-talki rigs. 5 I think.

Listen mostly. In the spring it's the best way to stay up on bad weather.

We had a major power outage about 9 or 10 yearn ago. Lost most of the power for upper TX, east NM and sw OK.

Local ham was the only way to communicate. LARC went into action and stationed hams at key places. Was pretty cool. Power was off for about 6-8 hours.

It's amazing how far you can talk with a handy when there is no EMI.

Can't wait to get that license. Studied a library book over the weekend, and it was full of too much BS and not enough meat. Picked up a great book today at Radio Shack.

My radio, handheld, will hopefully arrive by Friday, so I can start listening anyway.

Then, on Saturday, I'll take it up to the woods with me for our weekly shootout.

I'm excited about this new hobby. It will only enhance the gun hobby.
