Any Truckers out there Carry along a firearm? the reason I ask is because I'm thinking about getting into the trucking business. I was recently Laid off cuz of "Economic Down turn". Record #s for MT Unemployment. I'm looking into Company's like Swift, Trans Am, Sage, Does anyone Know the Gun Polices of those Company's?

Every trucking company I had experience with had a 'no guns' policy.

If you have to go into Canada, you'll be in a world of hurt.

ive driven otr for 19 years before i had a carry permit i mayve had something.now that im legal everywhere i go i definately have 'something"

most companys outright forbid weapons alot are dont ask dont tell.many drivers will try to tell u theres a federal law against it but that law was quietly repealed sometime back.i defy someone to show me a fed regbook with it still effective.

walk softly and carry a bangstick. if you have to use it you will probably lose your job but will be alive to the delight of those who care for you.

MT Gunny I sent you a PM.

Good luck with your search and be safe out there.

Interstate Commerce, Dept. of Transportation and firearms are a bad mix.

Not saying it's "right." I'm just saying that you're opening the door to some serious federal prosecution.

I spent a few years holding a steering wheel in one hand and a gear shift in the other...I gave it up just last year because of fuel prices and companies kept slowing the trucks down (you do get paid by the mile...not the hour).

I carried the whole time...but I did not go to Canada.

You will break laws sometimes...you will have no choice because many places you will have to go will have "no guns" signs posted.

I pulled RGN and step deck trailers...I loaded on a lot of military bases (tanks, humvees, helicopter hulls, etc.)..no guns allowed.

I once had to rent a motel room just for my pistol...I got an unexpected load out of Ft. Hood in Texas.

Illinois...I carried everywhere, but I'm not saying you should...if you get caught, you will be in big trouble.

New York (even NYC) ...same as above.

California...same as above.

Some may frown on that...but I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

There is an old myth that there are FMCSA laws against carrying firearms in a big truck...not true. I hired a lawyer to find out for me. OOIDA also says that its a myth.

2,250,000 miles without a scratch.

Most (but not all) of the lower 48 states have "peacable journey laws"...that is the law that says you can have it locked in a box, ammo stored separate and out of reach and its legal...even without a permit.

Then there are local ordinances in lots of cities that prohibit firearms...too many to list.

B.S.

As stated previously, would you care to cite any regulations backing this statement?

A couple of errors in this. It's a Federal law, not state law. Found in 18 USC 926a known as the Firearms Owners Protection Act. The second error is the statement that ammo must be stored separate from the gun. That is not true.

Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.

I'm well aware of the Firearms Owners Protection Act...

But I'm also well aware that in many states you will still go to jail until you have your day in court (IL and NY for example)...I've been in jail a few times in my younger years...didn't care for it much.

Its a safer (and simpler) bet to follow the states peaceable journey laws
