I'm a junior Marine just finishing up my initial training in California and when I get permanently stationed I'll want to bring my firearms with me on base.

Now, I know they have to be stored in the armory (and that it's a good idea to lock them in a case) but I'm not sure about the Cali. AWB applying to me or not. I vaguely remember hearing something aboout military being able to have standard capacity mags but I really have no idea. I also have an AR and an AK that i'd like to bring.

Anyone have any experience with keeping firearms on base? Are there usually ranges on base that you can use?

Thanks in advance.

When transferred to CA, a person in the military can bring banned firearms in the state and register them.

If they are stored at the armory and never leave base, it doesn't really matter what you have. If you're outside of base, all Cali laws apply. There is one that gives you an exemption for your AR but some paperwork is required.

the hard part will get the base CO to sign off on it.

I have no idea as far as Cali laws, but as far as a range on post you can use, I bet there will be one.

Ft Bragg had a decent range (and an outstanding trap and skeet range). Look on your duty stations web site for something along the lines of a sportsmans club or MWR facilities (or whatever morale, welfare and recreation type things you Marines have).

If you get stationed at Camp Pendleton I know that they have a pistol range that you can shoot anything form 22 to 50 cal pistol any time you want aslong as the range isn't being used for training. They also have a skeet range that I know of but I don't know if they have a rifle range for personal use. I'm sure they do.

I should be going to 1st recon at margarita, camp pendleton. I've actually found a skeet/trap/5 stand and pistol range, but i can't find anything on a rifle range.

Active duty military with orders for CA, can get a Military Assault Weapons Permit from the CA DOJ BOF.
The permit will allow you to bring into CA and use, all your privately owned "assault weapons".
If you go off of active duty status, the permit will no longer be valid. So, you will have to move the "assault weapons" out of CA, if you ever retire or become a reservist.

The Military Assault Weapons Permit does not allow you to import any large capacity magazines into CA. So, you can not legally bring any magazines that hold more than 10 rounds with you to CA. You can bring in magazine parts, so dissassemble your large capacity magazines and store them as parts & never assemble them in CA or assemble them to make permanent 10 round magazines.

If you goto calguns.net and ask about the Military Assault Weapons Permit for active duty military stationed in CA, they'll provide you with the correct contact information and how to process.

Leave them at home, getting them out of the armory usually requires the CO's signature, which can be difficult at times. The MPs will give you a hard time if your caught with them or ammo in your POV. Generally not worth the hassle.
You'll have plenty of "toys" to shoot while your at Cp Pendleton and the Corps supplies the ammo!
Just my $.02 (I was at Horno and tried the same)

Well, I'll ask around once i get there i guess and see if any Marines there can help me as well.

Ah horno. We'd always run over there from the far side of 52 area to use the pool.
