Personal Guns on Military Bases

It depends on the base, the CO and history of the base.

I know of a few bases that have really nice trap, skeet and/or sporting clays spaces and there on their own time, soldiers are allowed to shoot private weapons. Same with some that have competition style ranges for high power or pistol.

As far as carry on base, when I went on base to shoot, as a civilian I was required to leave my CCW at the gate with the MP as personal sidearms were not allowed per the CO, However as a guest on base invited to shoot at the ranges, my long guns were perfectly accepted. I had to enter and leave via a proscribed gate and I had to be on the list before hand. Just showing up and driving on base was not going to happen. NOTE this was several years ago. Current post 9-11 rules may apply. I was shooting at the Hook ranges at Benning.

Not sure where they will send you, but I just returned from a 4 year tour in Germany, and I was not allowed to bring any weapons with me.

In order to do so, you must get a German private firearms ownership license, which was a lot of red tape. You also had to obide by all the German laws concerning firearms ownership.

I chose to not bring them, and not get the license. To me it wasn't worth the hastle.

Okay, I know that, like soldiers, teachers that work with the DOD do not always (i.e. rarely) have any choice about where they are sent to serve. That is okay with my wife and I. We want to go all over the world. However, our first choices (should we have any choice) for a first tour (this is the term that the DODEA uses) would be Guam or the Azores. My wife loves the ocean and want to live on an island agian (She lived on the Azores when her father was stationed there in the seventies.)

Does anyone have any recent knowledge of the rules governing those two sites. I am aware that rules covering soldiers might not apply to civilians, but until I am ready to do specific research with the DODEA, you soldiers and Vets are my easiest resource.

BTW... Thanks to all you soldiers and Vets for your service to our country.

Your best bet is going to be contacting Legal at those bases. If you need numbers for them PM me and I'll get them for you. The soldiers and vets aren't always the best source of info. A lot of times you'll get false information because that's what they were told or that's what there experience was. Just like with the majority of civilians not knowing the laws concerning firearms (i.e. is that registered?) a lot of soldiers don't know what the rules really are, they are just passing on what they've been told, which is not always correct. Not knocking the soldiers and vets but when you want to know the rules your best bet is always going to be going straight to the ones who deal with them, the legal offices.

Since you're in SE MO, call the Ft Leonard Wood (aka Fort Lost in the Woods) Assignments Office at (573) 596-0136. They can probably answer your questions or know who can. Another POC would be FLW Army Community Services relocation division at (573) 596-0212.

For info about DODDS Guam, try here:

Azores:

Hope that helps,

Mike

Guam is a territory so it might not be that bad. I spent a little time there and actaully saw gun shops and firing ranges. However, they were very expensive and aimed at the Japanese tourist.

If you went there you could be in fair shape, not sure though.

Under certain situations (but not overseas, for example) some folks follow another military policy:

"Don't ask, and don't tell."

I have a neighbor who just returned from Guam. According to him, only shotguns are allowed.

it sounds like there is a fair amount of hunting to do there, and there are organized shooting sports!
