Got a call from my brother in law today...he and the wife are apparently in need of some money for bills so they asked me if i would like to buy their H&K USP chambered in 9mm for $350.
from what I understand, the pistol was purchased by my sister in law, used only 1 time at the range, and tucked away in the back of a closet.

I will freely admit that I really know nothing about H&K pistols other than $350 seems CHEAP.
just wondering if this is as good of a bargain as it seems.
I've looked at gunbroker and seen the USP's going for upwards of $550, but I really have no idea if there is a reasonable market for these should I decide that I really don't like it/need it/want to keep it.

They need to know by tomorrow if I want it, I told them i'm 99%sure, I guess I just need a little reinforcement...
so, what would you do??

thanks, chris

Since they're desperate offer 'em $300.

Just kidding.

$350 is an insult & a steal.

Do it.

That's a smoking deal on that gun. Jump on it and don't look back. The worst that can happen is that you don't like it and sell it for more money then you paid. You could easily get $500 for it.

Unless you like your sister and brother and law. Then I would pay more than $350 if they really need the money.

tell me his name so I can help him and his family??? Let me take that burden off his hands....

although not from family I recently purchased a Taurus 1911 for 250 under similar circumstances. He was also the original purchaser so was well aware of the value of the item. After an explanation he just wanted a quick sell which fair market value will not always get you. (like I wouldnt have bought it if it were 350 or 400 even though that still would have been a deal)

I say buy it with the option that they can always buy it back at your purchase price.(That is/was my agreement) Or if you REALLY trust your sister and brother in law... lend them the money and let them keep the gun. (that is unless you want a new 9mm :) )

Ok, thanks for the encouragement...I'm going tomorrow to pick up the pistol.

Heres the deal, I thought that the price sounded pretty low. I told him that if he were to take the pistol to the local gun store, that they would more than likely give him more than what he was asking of me....also told him to check out gunbroker. They know what they're going for, but told me that if I wanted it, then I could have it for $350.
I would love to give them more for it, but with a new baby due in 2 weeks, $350 is about the extent of my "play money".. If they are cool with it, then I'm cool with it.

I just wanted to give an update, in hopes that you wouldn't think I'm some douchebag trying to lowball/cheat family.

Thanks for all the motivation though, it makes it easier to shell out some hard earned cash.

That USP is a handsome reward for your honesty - glad you told him of its true "value" before taking it.

don't feel guilty, its about priority's and assets... I know Ive eaten quite a bit on "market value" on just wanting to be done with the deal (think of trading in your car when you know you could get 2-3k more on a private sale if you stick it out). Then other times its about keeping in in the family. The only thing I would have to say about it is dont sell it to anyone else without at least giving your sister the option of buying it back. (but then again Im just some random guy on the internet)

Another option would be to give them the $350 now and put the gun up for sale at a fair price. When it sells, pay yourself back and give them the rest.

I wouldn't have thought of that... Gives you a toy to play with in the meantime and your sister the money its worth. This of course only works if you have no desire to keep the HK.

I would have bought if he knew it was worth more but still only wanted the $350. Offer it back if or when he's back on his feet financially...then you're square with him.

I hope they still have a gun available to them for defensive purposes. Otherwise this seems fair and a good deal.

Well, I went and picked up the pistol today...had a good talk with the bro and sis-in-law about it. they were both happy with the agreed upon price, and were happy it was going to family and not just a random business owner.

so here are the official details------
H&K USP 9mm. Stainless slide, 3-10 round magazines, original box, cable lock, safety locking key(?)
only about 20 rounds ever fired through it, and it was purchased new by my sister-in-law.
Not something I really needed, but it's pretty cool to be able to say that I own a H&K.
Here she is..

I sold one of those not long ago to a big box store, didn't really care for it and there was another gun I wanted. I could have sold it for more in a private sale but needed a quick turn over, got just under $550 for it.

As much as I didn't really care for it, at $350 I'd buy it, and if it was from family, I'd be willing to sell it back to them at a future date for the same price (and it likely wouldn't have many, if any more rounds thru it)

edit*
By the way, mine digested everything I fed it except Blazer Aluminum Cased ammo.

Trust but verify...

In the great words of POTUS Regan; "trust but verify"

The $350.00 sounds good but look it over well to make sure it functions and can work. HK USPs are designed to take a lot of rough use but they may want to "unload" it(get it, :D) because it is broken or worn out.

It also sounds like this couple didn't clean/oil the USP a lot so think about that too...

Overall, if the HK works and has no big flaws then fork over the 350 beans...

Rusty,
Considering he (the op) bought it from his brother (well sister-in law actually as he said it was her's) I get the feeling the weren't trying to "un-load" anything and if it wasn't shot much it wouldn't need to be cleaned/oiled much...... :)

Sounds like you have a wonderful sister and BIL. They probably wanted to error on the side of peace in the family. So if ANYTHING is wrong with it DO NOT complain to them. They gave you more than a fair as-is price. Don't laugh, I have seen a couple of relationships destroyed over free stuff given that wasn't up to the receiver's standards.

Check it out good to make sure all the parts are there and that it functions properly, especially the trigger, firing pin, sear, etc. Then enjoy it and let your sis and BIL know how much you appreciate their generous deal. Be good to them, they obviously went out of their way to do right for you. Nice family all the way around!

no offense but I am goign to correct your price... I own a USP .45 but the price of the USP is MSRP $839 unless it's a compact.???
