I narrowed my choices down 2 three. H&K USP 40 Compact, P2000 in 40cal., & Sig P229R DAK in 40cal. Any opinions would be appreciated, also I noticed that the P2000 and the 229 dont have manual safety's is that good or bad for a first timer or does it matter.

Well I'm an old timer that likes to carry cocked and locked, High Powers mostly these days.

I haven't shot wither of the models you mention but have shot various H&K's and Sigs and all were fine pistols (but they could be fired single/double action). If you like Double Action Only then either would be fine.

The HK 40 Compact loaded with Double Tapp 165 gr Gold Dot bullets.. works for me everyday...

I would go with the USP. They're such amazing guns. Nothing against the Sig because I have one. However, I do have a preference for single action.

I dont even know where to start with this one.

I prefer the grips of the SIG
I prefer the controls of the HK USP
I prefer of the grips of the P2000 over the USP but dont like the decocker on the back of slide
I prefer the SA trigger of the SIG vs. all, but not the DAK trigger.
I prefer the slimness of the P2000 vs the USP
I prefer the looks of the HK USP to all.

I dunno. Thats a tough one. If it was compared to the DA/SA SIG i'd easily go for the SIG.

I have both the SIG and an H&K USP. Both are fine guns with exceptional workmanship. In my opinion, I would go with the H&K USP. I do like the manual safety that is available for use on the H&K.

I'd go for a regular da/sa Sig 229, amazing guns.....but really you can't go wrong with any you mentioned......
BTW, I have both a usp and a sig 239, both in .40........tom

If I had to have just one of the guns that you listed, I would have to grab the USP .40 Compact. I have the .45 ACP version of that gun and the enjoyment just never ends. It's rugged, it's practical, the controls are simple, it has a lot of safeties, the recoil is very manageable, the aesthetics are second to none (if you share my taste in autos).

To me, comparing the Sig and HK are like comparing apples and oranges. I think of the USP as the ideal weapon for CQB and the Sig as the ideal weapon for IWB carry.

When it comes to a CQB combat pistol I guess I am somewhat of a traditionalist. I won’t settle for anything but my .45 HK USP. In my opinion it is what all combat pistols should strive to be. It can be used as a DA/SA pistol or carried locked and cocked much like a 1911.

As for IWB I find my .40 S&W Sig P239 the ideal option. The single stack design makes the weapon very comfortable to carry IWB. It is very accurate and has very manageable recoil.

I own HK USPc in .40 and .45 and Sig 220 in .45, 226 in 9mm and 229 in .357sig.

I think the Sig vs. HK debate comes down to what feels best in your hand. Both are excellent pistols of comparable quality. They'll differ with respect to, say, how fast they "come up" to your eye (ie. draw to aim), how well they conceal on your body, etc.

It'd be great if you could test drive handguns before you bought them, but you may can instead find a Sig/HK owner you know and trade a box of ammo for putting 50 rounds through her.

Good luck.

Well the Sig P239 I owned, bought brand new, was unreliable. I have yet to find an HK that is unreliable. I'll take an HK over any other model of handgun in the world. Plus, someone else already mentioned USPs can be carried cocked and locked.

I'd take the USP Compact. C&L carry is my preferred method, and the others can't do it safely.

I just bought my 2nd H&K, a USP Compact in 40. It will be a carry piece for me. I handled both the SIG 239 and the USP Compact and found the H&K was a bit more comfortable in my hand and the ergonomics of the controls are easier for me with the H&K. In the end, I believe there is no wrong answer between the two because they are both top notch weapons. Go with the one that has the best feel and comfort to you. That's what I did.

Good Luck

Don't really pay attention to what people say on the internet. There's always bias. Glock people hate 1911 because they jam, 1911 people hate Glock because it's a toy gun. Hell I bought them both. :)

What you need to do, is to buy both. I bought at least 3 brand new guns of each, Sig and HK.
I found that I have to return 2 of the Sigs back to Exeter, one of them brand new right out of the box unfired by me. Jacked up right out of the box! None of my HK's ever need to be returned.

This is a dilemma that a lot of us have. I carry a Sig 229 in 357 Sig almost daily. I have a Wild Bills No Such Agency holster and it is really comfortable. Yet in my Tactical case in an M-4 and a HK USP 9 with 15 round mags. When I have to carry deep I choose a Colt Commander in a Sparks IWB because it is so narrow. I practice equally with all of them.

They're both excellent pistol brands. However, for me the controls of the USP are more ergonomic and the fit in my hand is nearly perfect. I thought the controls of the SIG were far less ergonomic and generally more difficult to operate.
