H&K vs. Sig

Have a Sig Sauer P229 40/357 and a HK USP45 fullsize.

The USP is definitely more fun to shoot but my .357sig P229 is no slouch either. Its just the USP fits me a lil better.I'm also more accurate with the HK.But thats not Sig's fault. It's mine(bad shooting).Something I will overcome with more training.

Both are great pistols but I like my USP a bit more.Am looking to get a P239 for carry though.

SiG or HK? HK or SiG? They both make very high quality pieces.

I prefer range time with my P7M8's and P9S to my P229 and P239, but I can tell you that they all shoot equally as well.

The SiG's may even have a leg up on the HK's. I know...hard to fathom...

Nice problem to have, huh?

Depends on what it's for - If you're looking for a carry piece that will be toted IWB, the P-2000's slimmer size will make it the winner.

My personal experience with the brands would rule out Sig - I too had problems right out of the box. It was stainless 229 that had FTEj's constantly, even after 3 thorough scrubbings and a 500 round grace "break-in" period. Still, I know they're good pistols.

My HK USP .45 compact has never had a hiccup.

After handling a P 2000 9mm today I decided to order one for myself. If it proves to be as reliable as the USPc, the slimmer size will make it an ideal carry gun when IWB carry is called for.

As always, feel should be the deciding factor since you've already narrowed it down to 2 reputably good brands. Let us know what you go with and how it performs!

Both are fine brands but two very different animals. I just sold my HK Compact 45 only because I decided to focus on 1911s for .45 autos. That said, never a hiccup and the Variant 1 is much better to my mind than the Sig decocker. I still have my 226 and 228 9mms because they function so well and fit my hand perfectly. And that's a second significant difference, the grip. I prefer the Sig grip and the Sig trigger, with the nod to HK for their decocker/safety (so much easier to reach with firing hand) and pure rock-solid ruggedness.

As for your 229 DAK versus the HKs, get 'em in yer hands and see how they feel and function for you. Too many subjective factors here. If I didn't already have the 2 Sigs, I would probably get the P 2000.

FWIW...

Has anyone brought up the price difference? I haven't priced out new guns but CPO Sigs cost significantly less than used H&K's, at least from what I've seen. CPO's are usually a little less than $500 with used H&K's running around $600. That $100 means more ammo!

I have 10k rounds through my HK USP40 fullsize and it has never failed me. It's never had a jam, FTE, FTF, ect. Not so much as a hiccup from this gun. I've fed it cheap ammo, expensive ammo, hollow points, FMJ, steel cased ammo, ect... it has ate everything I've fed it and asked for more. I would bet my life on this gun! My HK is very accurate, and very reliable. I love the ergonomics of the HK. I agree with Zen, all other guns should strive to be HK in the combat pistol world.

My dad has one of the first USP's made in '93 and it has just over 50k rnds through it. Never a jam or FTF or FTE. And after 50k something in the trigger mechanism did break, HK's awesome customer service, and lifetime warranty, took over and fixed the gun, no charge.

I've held the P2000, but I just bought a P2000SK as my concealed gun for my business. I love the way the P2000 feels. I love it's slim design, and I like the decocker on the rear. What I don't like is that there is no external safety or a trigger safety. I figure it should have one or the other. If I were in your shoes, I would go with the USPc. You'll like the safety/decocker if this is you first gun. My HK USPf 40 was my first gun. Even after buying a Ruger Vaquero, Kimber 1911, and a Beretta, my HK is still my favorite... it is also my go to gun.

In the end it really doesn't matter what any of us think. It's what you think. Go to an indoor range, rent an HK, rent a Sig, rent a Glock, rent what you can. Shoot it, and decide what you like more. When looking for my gun, I shot many many guns. And finally decided on the HK based on ergonomics.

Let me step up onto my soap box here.... HK's are not overpriced as people on the internet would like you to believe. People hear this then repeat it. Given a comparable Sig and HK, you will be within $20-$50 of each other. I posted this in another thread: There is a common misconception that they are overpriced. They aren't. Lets compare it to the Sig. I used Buds Gun Shop to search for price. And you have to compare apples to apples, so I'll compare the HK USP40 Compact and the Sig 229. The HK cost $673.68, whereas the Sig cost $651.43. For a grand difference of $22.25. There isn't a big different between the two. Now, with all that said. You have to be a good shopper. Markup is a bitch, some places will mark up certain guns more than others.

Here's my HK after a trip to the range:

I've had good service with my USP 40 and like the fact I can carry it c/l. In terms of value, I'm of the opinion that HK and SIG are both way over-priced.

I own a p229 DAK and a full size usp .45. I have shot the p2000. I borrowed it from a friend. Between the dak and the lem I shot with the lem more accurately in alot less time. The 229 DAK has taken practice, practice and more practice. It is an awesome pistol but if the p2000 feels good to you or if it is a tie, go with the HK. I will be getting a p2000 at somepoint. In addition, i have tried to resist the g23 but will most likely find myself with one of those also. I shot that more accurately than the Sig which I own. My fullsize usp.45 is my favorite firearm, but is a tad large for carry.

Well the Sig P239 I owned, bought brand new, was unreliable. I have yet to find an HK that is unreliable. I'll take an HK over any other model of handgun in the world. Plus, someone else already mentioned USPs can be carried cocked and locked.
Actually all guns DA/SA with manual safe can be carried as cocked and locked.
From my point of view - big advantage over DA only or Glock.
It isn't secure to have gun loaded with cartridge in DA or Glock (ready to go), but HK allow you to have cartridge in and take off safety - ready for SA. :)
I love mine USP 40c!!!!!

Then someone needs to let Ruger know they can quit telling buyers NOT to carry their da/sa P-series with safeties cocked and locked.

IMO, if you aren't secure in having a DA pistol loaded and ready, then you don't have the gun handling skills that are needed to be concealing a gun. But that's just my opinion. ;) Of course a safety makes it easier...

I don't have a problem carrying a DA gun with one in the chamber, I just can't stand Glocks and never will like them. I'll take an HK, Sig, Browning, 1911, Ruger, over a Glock any day.

I was refering to Val USP's comment.

I don't care for Glocks either.

My new HK P2000SK has no external safety. I will carry it on in the chamber while DA. I got the Var3, SA/DA w/decocker.

Just to chime in on this thread, after trying both the Sig 229-Compact and the HK USP compact at the local range, the HK just fits my hand better. I love how perfectly weighted the HK is. But, thats just my two cents.

Agreed, but USP :p better!

Well I've never fired the P2000, so I can't compare them.

I have trigger time behind all three.

I'll pitch my vote for the HK P2000. HK listened, reducing the slide profile and allowing for inter changable backstraps. (It's also fully ambidextrous for the lefties.)

But... What you really need to do is get your own trigger time in and decide for yourself.

my 4 cents.

You need to hold all the guns you are considering. Personally I like them both. I have 2 p229's on chambered in 40, the other in 9mm, however I also own 2 usp's(1 full size, one compact, both chambered in .40) I usually carry the 40 cal p229, but have recently carried the 9mm (due to recently broken right hand and loss of strength after cast was removed) Both are great guns, and I do carry the full size usp during some of the cold months as a leather coat covers my sholder system nicely, but in the end it is up to you and what you are comfortable with. Go to a gun range, and see if you can rent them. Most places will let you slide on the rental fee if you purchase a gun from them. if you ever have to pull a gun, you need supreme confidence in the weapon you are engaging. I think either one is an excellent choice.

My arch enemy's USP .45 TAC Extractor failed out of the box-Tee hee. Nothins perfect.
I've shot both a good bit. SIG hands down. Cold hammer forged barrel. 200,000 round tested and the trigger...ahhh. Its almost ball bearing smooth up to a point, suddenly stops, and just slightly more pressure gos bang. When it comes down to a pricey investment that your life may ride on, don't even bother with mine or anyone else's babble- Rent both for yourself & you'll see, my friend.
