Here is a story about why i REALLY wish my dad would keep his revolver loaded and in his room.
*Forewarning, before you ask "Why didnt you aler tthe parents, the simple fact is, i really didnt want to wake them up for nothing, especially some prankster that could be messing around with just fireworks, and i k now its better safe than sorry, but frankly, i really think, now, that i should have told my brother, who is 19*

Here we go, sorry if the spelling sucks, im excited right now...

Today i got the "Defender axe" from CTD, along with some flectar, but thats besides the point.

The axe is small and came witha sheath, the total axe is 11.5 inches.

Anyways, i was outside in my backyard, practicing my DM's and my staff. I Had the lights turned off, so i could 'envision' my foes better, and i had my glasses off.

Anyways, i did assailed a few attackers witht the bo staff and then i got this feeling in my stomach.

A very, very bad feeling. I Stopped. Immediatly. Ill admit, right then i was scared.

My yard is about 100 feet long and 50 feet wide, the last 20 feet of that 50 is
some wierd terraced garden that goes down and out about 4 feet, and then there is regular lawn.

At each end of the lawn are some small trees groupede together.

At the west end of the lawn, instead of seeing light shining through the branches i see only blackness. This sets me off. The cluster of trees area bout 5' by 2'

I Retreat, my bo staff in hand, to grab my glasses. I Then aprroach the tree, and i could feel something on the other side of the cluster. Im about 4 feet awayf rom the cluster. I tell myself to calm down, as by now i am figgin scared. I Try to firmly say, "I know you are there. I am going to back away, and you can leave peacefully."

I stood for another second, then steeled myself and backed away. I saw nothing move. I Went up the stairs of my deck (The backyard is set lower than the front, so where the front is ground level the back is about 10 feet drop. I go inside the sun room, and i lock/block with wood the sliding door from my sunroom to my home.

I then procede to open both windows and blinds that klead to my backyard and turn on all the lights, to get some light back there. I also turn on the backyard light, but that only coveres about 1/3 of the yard.

THen i run upstairs, and grab my new axe and my aluminum sword, turn off the attic and my fan, which make great noise, as well as my sabre in my other room. I put on a belt, (Im wearing soem pajama shorts, but the belt stayed on good enough) and put the aluminum sword through it and the sheath for my axe and the axe itself. I Unsheath the sabre and walk carefully back downstairs to the mian floor. Then i unlock the sliding door and go back into the yard.

Im still scared crapeless, and aprroach the cluster again. I Circle around, and notice nothing. It still doesnt feel right though. I search the rest of the backyard and circle around tothe front. All appears well.

Then i realize i left the sliding door open.

So, needless to say, i think "****" and run around back, and into the sliding door, and lock it closed again. My dog, a small rat terrier is barking, but he barks at anyone, even me, so i 'steathily' put away the sabre, and take the axe in my right hand and the aluminum sword in my left, and go upstairs, check all the rooms, and go bnack downstairs to check the garage and basement. I Do so, lock the garage so anyone in there is stuck and cant get inside the house, go down to the basement but all checks out OK, so i turn on the rest of the lights and put awaqy the alum sword and the sabre. I still have the axe on as i write this.

Moral of the story, i felt WAY safer with the axe and short aluminum sword (about a foot and a half long) theni did with the sabre when i was inside checking rooms. It was more manuevarable and lighter.

I think, if i had had a gun, i would have felt better with a pistol than a rifle or even shotgun. My mini 14 is short, but my dad keeps all the ammo locked up, and i dont have any ammo for it, though my pump .22 would have done fine, even been preferable,, and even the mauser would be better than nothing.

Maybe i should talk to my dad about it, but i am 99% certain he would say no. Last time we were camping i thought about maybe sneaking away 11 rounds for the pump .22 but decided it could end up very bad, so i did not.

If the other fellow had had a gun, i would have been screwed frankly. I Thought abbout grabbing my mini 14 and sticking a 30 rounder in it to try and scare them away with it, but it turns into nothing more than a club if i actually need to use it.

Also, i got incentive to finish my maille (chainmail) vest, as if the attacker had had a blade it would be difficult for him to severeley injure me with it, unless they had a spear, which i doubt.

Lots of thoughts tonight. Mostly, that next time go into the backyard im going to bring a flashlight and the axe. The bo staff can, frankly, fubar someone up if i have wide space like the backyard, and i am dang good with the staff, but if something happens inside...the axe. Prefereably a gun, but since i cannot have one, the axe.

So, was there someone in your backyard or not? Frankly, going BACK OUT was an idiotic move on your part. You made it to the safety of your house once and decided to better arm yourself and venture back out? Where's the logic? You couldn't've sat tight and watched the area in question from behind closed doors?

A good chance for...

the elder statesmen (and stateswomen) of the board to help develop a young lad with the potential of becoming one of the sheepdogs. Or ridicule him and start the destruction of what is obviously a warrior spirit.

KriegHund, you might consider sitting down in the cold light of dawn and analyzing your actions. List the things you did right and list the things you did wrong. Seek to strengthen those actions you took that were right and diminish those that were wrong.

As a start for your lists:

Good - retreated safely into house and turned on the outside lights (even if they only covered 1/3 of the yard). Good establishment of a defendable observation post (inside lights to light the outside would only outline you to any potential BG's lurking in the shadows).

Not good - having retreated to a defensible position, gave up that defensible position and ventured forth to slay the dragon. What exactly did you hope to gain?

Reading your missive leads me to believe the two lists should be approximately equal in length.

While going back out to force contact and engagement is tactically indefensible there is something to be said for having the 'nads to not have reacted to the situation by crawling under your bed and wetting yourself.

The real work of this particular situation has just begun..your self analysis.

Youth and a fighting spirit will get you far... youth and a fighting spirit tempered with sound tactics and use of all your resources (walls, light, phone, other folks in the house) will get you to the other end alive.

Stay inside= good. But thats the opurpose of this post, ill keep it in mind next time.

Back out- very bad.

Aluminum swords make up for in lightness what they do in hardness.

Lighter= faster swing. I gouged my leg with that sword (on accident) and it was a nasty wound, simply becuase the edge is alot more jagged. Bled alot, and its taking a bit longer to heal. But make no mistake- you do not want a swing taken at you with that sword.

And as far as i can tell, if there was anyone out there they left. My gut feeling is that there was, but they left afteri went inside.

You might also take the opportunity to adjust or augment the backyard lighting. Floods aren't expensive and wiring one in isn't rocket science. It may be as simple as adjusting the aim of what you have. Learning basic electrical is a good skill for the toolbag anyway.

I guess you should ask your pop first, or explain it (truthfully) as providing more light for after-dark backyard use.

Axe, sword, armor... where's your javelin and/or (cross)bow. It's better to not let 'em get to arms reach unscathed. ;)

Not a bad first encounter, remember however. In the modern day, you need to focus on defending yourself not killing the badguys. If they need killin to keep your heart beating and your family safe, then so be it. Fight smarter, not harder.

A 12guage would've been good for this scenerio, or even a simple inexpensive rifle like an SKS or Mosin Nagant. Though neither are particularly well suited to this task, perhaps the big sword bayonet of the Yugo SKS could give you alittle peice of mind?

Migoi - point well made.

Kreighund, I wasn't making light of your situation, it just became funny too me in your retelling. Please don't take my humor to heart. Good for you for wanting to protect yourself and your family.

Krieghund,

You need a good bright flashlight that you can light up the back of your yard with. Surefire G2 is a great choice for 25 to 30 bucks. If that's too much look into the Brinkmann Maxfire LX from Wal-Mart. Both should do a respectable job of lighting up any bad guys back there.
