First, as someone else pointed out, one thing stands out.
You did something that a lot of people can never bring themselves to do--you saw your fear, you confronted it head on, and overcame it, forcing yourself to think and act as rationally as you could, given the circumstances. Hats off to you for having more gravitas than a lot of older folks in that instance.
Now, here's some food for thought:
A lot is said about intuition being somewhat silly, and having that feeling meaning next to nothing. I beg to differ.
You see, your eyes and brain see a LOT more than you think. You just don't concentrate on it enough to notice.
Thus, intuition usually means that you have seen or taken note of something with your subconscious mind. Translated:
There WAS someone there.
As was also mentioned, you did well by backing away to a position of strength. Yes, you should have stayed inside. You should also have alerted someone else inside, and called the police.
I second the procurement of some strong lighting. Have some outside, and also get one of the plug in spotlights of at least 500K candlepower.
Do NOT attempt to go into an area like that yourself, and NEVER attempt to clear a building or home by yourself, unless you have to get to a loved one.
This is something you do NOT want to do yourself. When I have to clear a building, there are always two of us--one in front with duty gun, and one in the back with either shotgun and buck as the first round, or an AR ready to go.
In any case, you did fine. You'll do to ride the river with.
