Handgun Magazines

There is a story which I believe to be true, about a long-ago gun writer who used both his own well-known name and also a nom de plume. As himself (let's call him "Bill Jones", he would dash off an article on how auto pistols are better than revolvers, or slow, heavy bullets better than fast, light ones. The next month, as "Abner Klotz", he would respond to that fool Jones and show that auto pistols are junk and only light bullets are any good. The next month, "Jones" would respond .... Well, you get the picture. The guy made a lot of money arguing with himself and those in the know could never decide if he had any real knowledge, or if both of him just copied what other, more qualified, folks had written.

I read to soak up everything gun related, especially handgun related. I remember reading stories and assessments which were well written and mostly fair minded. I loved Bob Milek, Dave Arnold, Jan Libourel, and some goodies from the further past in Bill Jordon and Elmer Keith. I loved that there were just as many articles about revolvers as there were semis. Some of the good writers are still around, but I don't think I have read a magazine in a decade. I miss the excitement of going to the mailbox and getting my monthly copies...now I too am a bookstore browser, not usually very interesting, but sometimes. I think I long for my youth more than the changing content.

I read American Handgunner, Handloader and American Rifleman as part of my NRA membership. I found this thread interesting because as part of my Christmas I was offered another subscription and after much thought and a trip to the bookstore magazine rack I was unable to come up with another gun rag I wanted to read when offered a free subscription. I arrived at this decision for many of the reasons already mentioned.
