Visited my LGS to shoot the breeze tonight.

He told me that NJ NICS system, which was never overly efficient, no longer takes phone calls and requires that all applications for a NICS check be sent in by Fax. And then they do not respond.

He wants to make sales but is unable to deliver.

Anyone get a NICS check in NJ this past week?

How long did you wait.

I know that the law says that the FFL can deliver if not denied within a certain time, but they do not want to do it.

I am not in the market to buy, but if I was it would really stink.

So this is a NJ computer system on top of FBI NICS check? Get rid of the dang state one. All the cool states are.

When a NJ FFL wants to transfer a gun he used to call a NJ office and in about 30 seconds the transfer would be approved over the phone (I always gave my social security number and this was said to speed up the check).

The system closed at 8 PM on weekdays and was closed Sundays.

Once the phone line was busy and the dealer faxed it in and I picked up the gun the next day.

Now the phone line is closed and all checks must be faxed and the people on the other end are not getting around to approving the faxed check requests (according to my local FFL).

I NEVER flame on the net....this is a first for me. So...ahem...here goes. Jersey....Christie.....Bushmaster1313.........with friends like these who needs enemies?

I bought a 1911 in NJ on 1/5, and I wasn't able to pick it up until 1/8.

My LGS was also doing the NICS check via fax, but aside from the 3 day delay, there were no reports of failures to respond. My understanding of it was that it was being done because their phone lines were being overwhelmed with the panic buying that's been going on.

What did seem out of place is that an SSN was required on the form they faxed. I was told the transaction would not proceed without one, although an SSN is voluntary on the 4473.
