It was not possible to buy a gun in New Jersey on Thursday or Friday of this past week. The NJ NICS system was "down".

Bummer. I wanted to pick up my latest acquisition from the FFL to whom it had been shipped and it was simply not possible.

I did get to see it and I filled out the paper work to be submitted on Monday, but all I have are the pictures from Gunbroker:

P.S., the FFL was very responsible, first thing out of the box and he measured the barrel--18 1/8 inches, exactly how they left the High Standard Factory.

I can see why you would be eager to pick this one up from your dealer! That is one very minty looking High Standard Riot Gun. I know they weren't built for many years (like from the mid '60's to the early '70's), so to find one in such great shape is quite the find.

The NJ NICS system was "down".
The burden is on them, they can drop it and go to the Federal system (which is enough damn infringement already) or they can just drop it.

SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED
Elected officials who put such infringements in should be unemployed rapidly.

I haven't seen one of those for sale in a long time. I have one I bought new in 1976 or so. They are a great home defender.

I think they just took a two day vacation

I have a question - Doesn't NICS stand for NATIONAL Instant Check System?
That would mean you couldn't buy a gun in any state if the system was down. This is not a Jersey thing right?

Also, if the instant check system is down, the only other option is to call it in. Sometimes when you do that you can't get through cause everyone else is calling it in.

Sorry in advance but I agree with the dealer. It's better to wait for the system to be available and perform the check correctly then to just throw up your hands and let the gun go.

1 last thought. The last 2 days were Christmas Eve and Christmas day. I'd venture to guess that these were national holidays and that the Federal employees were off for the day. This would suggest that the system was not available.

Sorry about the delay, but it'll be worth it when you have that classy looking shotgun in your hands.
I grew up in N.J., but wasn't into shooting back then. I visited the state a couple years ago. I had some free time, around family reunions, and visited a store that had guns. Since I didn't have a FOID card, or whatever you call them, the shop clerks acted like I was unclean just being back by the gun counter. I left, I could tell I was making them nervous. Too bad, I really like living in Missouri now.

Each state has the option of adding an additional background check (or any other restriction) that they please onto the transfer process. NJ, like several other states, imposes a NJ LEO check in front of and in addition to the National NICS call, so it's not just simply a matter of having the Federal NICS system up/down....

Connecticut is similar. Christmas Eve was a state (cost saving) furlough day, and I believe that the state was closed for Christmas too, soo....

Nice High Standard. It should be very slick. Pay attention to the retaining nut on the front of the pump. Mine came off during a match and screwed my day up. (A little blue loc-tite fixed it).

How much did that one run you?

Yes, I am a current resident. :cuss:

You didn't get the memo? I did and rushed to the store after work. Tuesday was shotgun day in NJ.

That is a nice looking shotgun.

I'm still appalled at the arrogance of setting up a redundant background check and then not staffing the mickey-mouse office that pretends to do them for the state. Un-employ your politicians by any means necessary, they think you're a criminal and treat you like one.

I feel your pain

I got a call that my handgun permit was ready - thursday afternoon. took me 5 minutes to go from the PD to the dealer where my FNP 45 USG has been cooling for over 3 weeks now. the ffl couldn't get through to NJ NICS. They actually shut down their phone lines due to insufficient staff to handle the calls. You then have the option of faxing your NICS in, but then the reserve the right to take 3 business days. My ffl tried again friday am calling every 15 minutes and again, NJ shut down the phone lines. He then faxed the NICS in. Saturday was Christmas and not a business day. So Monday will be day one.

We truly live in a prison state. We have the FID card (background check including fingerprinting), then for handgun, you need a separate permit - fill out the permit app, fill out a criminal background check, and a mental health check. NJ "shall issue" thepermit within 30 days but few seldom do. My PD is fairly good about that. But then after all that, they make the ffl call the state PD who then calls NICS.

Oh, and we have to pay $15 for the service. Plus tax.

I feel like I am in some kind of mental training discipline for patience.

Grrrrrrrrrrrr. :(

I hereby grant New Jersey the permission to secede, unannounced, at the time of their choosing, with emphasis on sooner-rather-than-later, and no immediate or future financial penalty, asking only in return that they keep the disease known fully as "New Jersey" confined to their border.

Major Bummer!
How long did you have to wait for the pistol purchase permit?

More Bummer, Monday looks like a snow day.
How long does a body have to wait to satistfy the urge to take possession of a gun paid for two weeks ago?
