I finally got my Ruger 10/22 scoped up with an old Simmons ProAir 4-12x40 AO - the only scope I have available for it at the moment.

It's quite a heavy scope, and I added to the weight by using vertical split ring steel mounts to attach it to the rail. All that weight began to worry me.

I know rimfire doesn't have much recoil, but I'm wondering if the fast backward and forward movement of the bolt is going to strip the threads on the aluminum receiver over time.

Would I have been better mounting a lighter scope, and using aluminum mounts to keep the weight down?

And yet I've seen plenty of photos of 10/22s with much bigger optics on top.

Would appreciate some advice from Ruger owners.

I`ve mounted a Simmons Whitetail Hunter 6.5-20x50 on mine using a Weaver rail type mount and Burris steel rings. It`s been there a while and no trouble yet. I wouldn`t worry, keep things snug and you should be fine.
