I've heard about issues with scope creep on the mod 60, and recommendations to use a one piece mount.

Is this really necessary, or will good quality two piece mounts do the job? The scope would be a Simmons Pro Air 4-12x40 AO, which is quite a heavy item. Would that make it more or less likely to move.

I suppose I could also put an arrestor behing the rear ring.

I've never liked the look of one piece mounts - not even on air rifles.

the "scope creep" is because it is a groove and not a standard drilled and tapped receiver. rings that are installed carefully should work. A rushed or sloppily performed installation will move over time. All of that is based on the assumption that it is the mod 60's fault and not the scope.

Assuming scope creep is from recoil, the scope will try to move foreward.

If it's from the bolt slamming into the barrel as it feeds, the scope will tend to move backward.

In actual practice, I have used Weaver tip-off rings on 3/8" grooved .22's for about 50 years now, and so far, scope creep from either recoil or feeding has never been a problem. Never owned a Marlin Model 60 though, so can't say about them for sure.

Loc-tite. It's not just for screws.:D

That big, heavy scope will make a Marlin 60 feel pretty funny, but to each his own. Some people don't care how a gun balances.

I put a Weaver 22rf specific 3x7 on a Browning semi auto. Would be a nice setup for the Model 60. I've used Simmons rings for years and never had a problem with them. Might offend a few but I even have the Simmons rings on a CZ and a Anschutz.

It's the only spare scope I've got. I come from the UK where people regularly put x24 and higher scopes on airguns.:D

I'd like something smaller, but you can only get really cheap scopes here. When I say cheap, I mean cheap quality. They aren't cheap to buy.

Until I can get something from the States or UK, I'll just have to use the Simmons.

It's an old scope with decent build quality and reasonable optics, made to deal with the whiplash recoil of air rifles, but also good for rimfire.

I think they were made in the Philipines. And, in the UK they were quite expensive.

In any case, it's a damn sight better than a lot of the stuff coming out of China at the moment.

I've had my Marlin 60 for about five years now and have not noticed any creep. Now that I read this, I will check to make sure everything is tight though.

If your getting 'scope creep' on a 22LR, something is seriously wrong!

Often times the 'cut' of the engagement surfaces of the lesser expensive, and even some of the high dollar stuff, will not be machined at an angle that will engage the 'groove' on the top of the receiver correctly.

We have had excellent luck with BKL brand aluminum tip-off (for grooved receivers) scope rings, they can be had from Pyramid Air Airgun Sales.

The Leupold, Steel Tip-off rings and the Burris, Steel tip-off rings have pretty much always worked well, with the exception of some European firearms.

Pay attention to the 'Angle of the Cut" on your tip-off scope rings.

I mounted a Bushnell 4x32mm scope on my Model 60 14 yrs ago and POI hasn't changed. Haven't noticed any creep either. I bought a set of cheap medium height Millet Rings at Wally World. Seem to be holding fine for me.

I have owned model 60s since the 60s. I have problems with maybe two sets of rings out of all the scopes and rings I have used over the years. The old style Weaver tip-off mounts were not a problem, but the serrations on the claws did noticably bite into the aluminum of the receiver. For some of the less aggressively clawed mounts, a few drops of loctite or nailpolish on the claws stopped any creep.

ADDED: Air rifles often have more shock on firing than a .22 rimfire, so air rifle rings for the 3/8" grooved tipoff receiver mounts are often more robust than the typical .22 rifle rings (especially the cheaper rings). The rings currently on my model 60 were intended for an air rifle and they have stayed in place, whereas a couple a other ring sets I have owned would creep under recoil.
