I have 2 AR-15's and after seeing pics of Nomad's classes and just reading about others' AK's I MUST have one! I know accuracy isn't AR quality, but that's fine, I like what i hear about the reliability.

Can anyone reccomend a good brand (ie, Century etc)?

Thanks-45Guy

Based mostly on what I've seen people report, Vector, Lancaster and Arsenal are the top tier. I've got a Lancaster, and that's the only one I can relate experience with - I think the Lanc is a top quality gun.

Going with a Saiga and either converting it yourself or having someone else do it ain't bad, either. The Saiga is a sporter AK from the Ishvek factory in Russia. Check out FBMG

They even make a shotgun in the AK pattern!

Oh, and I'd stay away from Century. See how they treated Nomad, and he had a several-thousand dollar order.

I think it depends on budget. I have an Arsenal SA-M7s and in my humble opinion, is one of the finest AK variants I've ever come accross. Fit and finish is superb, the trigger is sublime and the accuracy out of the steyr barrel is amazing....Sounds like I'm describing a frine wine eh? ;) All that comes at a price - Arsenals are expensive, but in my view - worth every nickel.

With civvie AK lookalikes, paying more gives you better fit and finish, but even the "low end" AK's currently available will be very reliable.

I have a SAR-1 (Romanian). The Romanians are the cheapest AK's out there, but mine is perfectly functional and accuracy is decent (2.5 MOA on a good day with optics, as far as I can tell). A WASR-GP is a lot of rifle for the money.

My SAR-1, with Kobra collimator sight:

Even the most inexpensive WASR10 is a riot to shoot, don't have to worry about babying it or scratching up the finish. Best $300-350 you can spend.

Get the Saiga S.223 conversion from Will @ Red Jacket, have the Galil AR adaptor installed and now your rifles can be fed from the same magazines.. How cool is that!

PS

Tell him I sent you, if you do buy one from him!

If it's for blasting, and you can afford to put it back now... buy a bunch of 5.45x39 ammo....

If you buy 10K it'll be worth buying the rifle... (Cost savings)

If you are not planning on beating the rifle to death, I'd buy an Arsonal...
I'm planning on wearing these AK's out which is why I went with WASR's.
(Nothing wrong with them that can't be fixed, but most people would rather spend an extra $200 or more and be assured of a working rifle right off the bat.)

I'd rather buy 2 more cases of ammo...

-Don't buy an underfolder if you plan on high volume shooting.

Nomad, you're kinda the main culprit in this whole thing.:D All those purdy pics of your Contractor classes, plus the various comments by you and other members on their utter reliability, is what really turned me on to these rifles. Also, AK-47's make hippies cry, that helps to motivate my need/want.

Seriously, thanks for the input guys, hope there is more to come.
