I have a Century M70 underfolder and am having FTF problems. It came with a steel Yugo bolt hold open mag. Every few rounds through that mag sees a jam from the mag to the lip just below the chamber. This has happened consistently with Wolf as well as brass cased ammo.

If I use a Bulgarian waffle mag, it is more reliable, but I have not experienced the legendary reliability AKs are known for. I have several ARs, but this is my first AK. I realize that I did not acquire a higher end AK, but have to wonder about this Yugo from Century.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Borrow some other AK mags from friends or folks at the range.

Trying out more magazines will help diagnose a mag problem.

CAI AKs are pretty much bottom-feeder rifles. I don't trust them to be able to make a sandwich.

Check your AK against one that works. Look at the height of the bolt guide rails, chamber area, height that the magazine rides in the receiver as opposed to the working rifle.

If it's a new rifle you have the option of returning it and spinning the CAI wheel again.

the only "C" company that comes to mind that sells Yugos (NOT the ones who assemble since everyone used to sell them) would be Classic Arms Int. (CAI). are those the ones whom you go it from?

eiother way, I would suggest contacting the vendor immediately after you figure out what the problem probably is.

I had the same problem with my century yugo underfolder. I tried several different mags, and brands of ammo, but it would never pick up a new round. Sometimes it wouldn't even eject the round that had just been fired.

I sent it back to century, and got it back three weeks later. It runs flawless now. If it is new from Century I would recomend sending it back.

Thanks for the information. My rifle does say Century International Arms on the receiver, and has the Yugo grenade launcher/gas cut-off above the gas block.

I'll try it with a few more mags (I have a bunch) and see. It does appear that the mag that came with the rifle rides a bit lower than I would think it should. I have heard that the bolt hold open mags can be tempermental.

If that doesn't fix the problem, I'll send it back for a diagnosis.

Thanks again.

I'm wondering if your rifle has a bullet guide installed? Mine came without one. Here you see just a flat surface machined into the trunnion and a shaved-off rivet filling the hole that probably secured one at one time:

I hadn't a range opportunity to actually fire it, but being the tinkering sort, made one in the meantime from a piece of steel bar stock. Sorry, no actual pics but it's similar to this one from an Arsenal SLR106:

The guide is just thick enough (about 0.100") to lift the cartridge a bit as it exits the magazine. Pushing cartridges out of the mag with the rifle on the bench, the bullet tip now goes right into the chamber, where it wouldn't previously with the bullet tip plowing straight into the flat breech surface.

'Course, the proof is in the shooting, and now that the weather's better I might actually get to try it!

Tom A:

Thanks for the reply and photos. I will have to check, but I think my AK looks just like yours-without a bullet guide.

I purchased this rifle new last fall, but like you, the weather and other projects always conspired against getting much range time with it.

At this point, I am inclined to send it back to Century-I don't want to have a rifle that is not reliable.

Thanks again.

In reply to the post by SJDigriz, I guess I always assumed that Century built these. If they didn't, who did? Thanks for any info.:)

Century no longer builds a lot of stuff in-house. They contract with reputable builders for their AK kit builds (sorry, I don't have any specific names).

i bought my century built yugo underfolder about two months ago and have fired 500 rounds outta her with no problems. I would take apart the mags and clean and lube and even lube the rifle really well till it breaks in then see what happens
