I thought I knew a little bit about shotgun slugs, but recent research has proven to me that a little bit is all that I know.

There was a recent thread on bears, and a current one on elk, both asking about slugs. Most answers suggest Brenneke slugs over Foster types for more penetration.

When people recommend Brenneke, are they referring to the type of slug or the company that makes them, or is that the same thing? The reason I ask is because Midway advertises "Brenneke KO Foster type slugs."

It appears that Brenneke (the company) makes Foster slugs. Is this a misprint on Midway's part or is it actually true?

Are Brenneke KO slugs of a Foster design with harder lead?

The company. Foster is a type of slug.

Yeah, I got that, but Brenneke is a type of slug too, (right above Foster in the wiki link) as well as the name of a company that makes slugs. The confusion comes from the fact that the company that shares a name with one type of slug apparently produces the other type of slug.

To confuse things even further, Brenneke makes a version of the KO slug that is a sabot :D.

The traditional Foster type slug is a cup-shaped, hollow based soft lead slug, designed so that it works like a badminton shuttlecock- its weight-forward design helps keep it flying nose forward. The original Brenneke design is similar in performance, in that it is a weight-forward design with a hard lead solid slug. But with the Brennekes, the airfoil effect is provided by an attached wad at the base of the slug, not by a hollow lead base.

It's the hard solid lead slug in the Brennekes that gives them superior penetration over soft lead Foster type slugs, and makes the Brenneke a superior choice for dangerous game.

This is all purely hypothetical, since I generally hunt mammals with a rifle and most of the mammals I hunt can be ethically taken with a .22, but let's say I wanted to hunt a bear or elk or other large animal with a shotgun slug. Would a Brenneke KO be a good choice or would I need to use one of their other slugs?

I like the fact that their hunting slugs have pictures of deer and bear on the box but their law enforcement slug is meant for killing trucks :D :

Excellent choice, IMHO. I have a bunch of the KO slugs and they are indistinguishable from Brenneke slugs.

Just to confuse things, I have some Rottweil shells with 1 1/8 ounce Brenneke projectiles too.

:D

there is yet another

Hello guys, this is my first post here.

Brenneke also makes the Super Sabot.

here is a pic of the actual slug I took down a 16 pointer with.
it's a 63 caliber, 1 1/8 oz sabot slug

Here he is on my wall too.

"Brenneke" is both a company and a type of slug. A Brenneke type slug is solid with wad attached to the base that remains attached during flight. It's purpose is drag stabilization, as opposed to weight forward stabilization with a Foster type slug. Foster type slugs are hollow.

Brenneke, the company, still makes and sells the original Brenneke type slug:
