My 686 was shipped back to me from SW repair work (which has been an absolute nightmare. But that’s another thread) and it’s headed to the wrong address.

It’s been in for repair sense a week before Christmas. I moved in that time. I called not once but twice to explain that and try to insure shipping info had been updated and they assured me it had.

So now the gun is on a Fed ex truck en route to my old address and I’m not sure what to do here. Can’t call S&W till Monday. I’ll start trying to contact FedEx here shortly.

Do you have a FedEx account? If so it might be possible to have the package held at a FedEx facility.

If you talk to FedEx I would mention that you moved and want the package held for pickup at a facility near your new house. Personally I would avoid mentioning the contents of the package because for many it will set off alarm bells and they will start to treat you like your shipping illegal contraband.

I'm not sure of FedEx's policy on this issue but I'm guessing they won't be accommodating. Good Luck

Can they ship a gun to your house ?
You may ship a gun directly to the manufacturer for repair, and they may ship it directly back to you. However, I believe the manufacturer can ship back only to the address from which the gun was sent. IIRC, if you move, they have to send the gun back to an FFL who then has to transfer it to you. Hence, I've moved this to legal so we can get a definitive answer with cites to the pertinent law, rather than my speculation from aging memory of when I worked for an FFL.

I'd go to the old address and explain to the current resident about the problem. I'd ask him to phone me upon the arrival of the package and I'd swing by, pick it up and take him (them) to dinner.

If you have a Fedex account you can probably take immediate steps online to have the package held for your pickup at the nearest Fedex facility. You don't need to discuss the contents. You don't need to tell them that you have moved.

I do this frequently with UPS. I live in the country and UPS does not like sending a brown truck out my way. I think they hold my packages until they have enough other deliveries to make it worthwhile for them to send the truck out.

If you have the package tracking number you can change delivery options on-line.

this happened to me with Midway, and UPS. UPS would not do anything, would not even allow it to be held for pickup until the first delivery attempt was made. Midway rerouted the package (charged me $24 for the convenience). I would try S/W again, or try to track it, and make friends with the residents.

I had a rifle in for repair with Cooper of Montana, I shipped it from where I used to live but I'd moved when it was time for them to return it to me. I'd called and let them know about the move, they apparently keep good records and returned the rifle to me at my new place. I think the only thing that's legally required is for the manufacturer to return the firearm to the same person they received it from.

So we called FedEx and were told what mjsdwash said. They won’t do anything till a delivery attempt is made, then they may be able to let me pick it up.

I even tried to get them to just stop it and return it to sender with no luck.

At this point, I’m getting on a helicopter in the morning and will be offshore for a month or so, so I’m leaving my wife to take care of it.

I’d have had no problem with them shipping to an FFL for me to go transfer. I told them on two separate phone calls that I had moved and gave them the new address and they said it would be sent here.

S&W has been less than accommodating through this whole process.
