I've got a few guns, I've got a few wants, I may have a need or two. Help me figure out what should come next.

Have:

-10/22 scoped
-old Remington 22
-Norinco SKS
-CBC 12 ga. single-shot

-9mm S&W Sigma
-OMC/AMT .380 Backup
-4" .357M
-2" .38
-2" .32 S&W Long

I've got the bug to pick up a Taurus PT-92, but I already have a carry 9mm and don't need it. Same for an XD-45, but a 45 w/ 13+1 would be nice. A better pump 12 gauge would be nice for home defense and/or skeet, but technically the role is filled...A higher power rifle (such as a scope'd K31) would be nice for hunting and marksmanship matches (which I've been wanting to get into), but I won't be able to hunt this year, and I could easily clear off the feral hogs from our country property w/ my SKS.

Someone talk some sense into me! :scrutiny:

The pistol is your most basic life saving tool. Any fire marshal will tell you to have back up fire extinguishers.

Pick your favorite pistol. Buy another one just like it. Then, go to Wal-Mart and buy one of those big storage tubs and start filling it full of magazines (if auto) and ammo.

Just my $.02. You asked for opinions and I felt giving.:D

You need a Sig and a Glock. Even the pre-owned ones will last you forever. Then as time goes by start getting 1 each of milsurp rifles and pistols. They are real bargains and fun to shoot.

Just my opinion.

Go for the bolt action rifle in 6.5x55, 280 Rem. 308 Win. or 30-06 , just to name a few :)

Are you a hunter? Or a zombie killer?

If I were starting a "hunting collection" from scratch, I would want:

- .22 LR autoloader for small game
- .223 Rem bolt action with varmint barrel for hunting same and long range target practice
- .243 Win bolt action for calling / rousting out coyotes
- .30-30 (.30 WCF) lever action for deer and heavy nostalgia
- .270 Win or .308 Win or .30-06 Springfield bolt action for all around hunting
- 12 ga pump action shotgun with screw-in chokes for birds (or, if I could afford it, a good double barrel, but I'm thinking "good" and "affordable" don't go together in this context)

If I was adding more, I would add:

- .22 LR bolt action "target grade" rifle for serious marksmanship practice
- .22 LR bolt action, striker-fired "youth rifle" for teaching kids
- SKS or mini-14 as a "beater"... something to keep behind the truck seat for those unexpected encounters with coyotes and other unforeseen needs
- 20 ga single-shot break open shotgun for teaching kids

In the handgun category, I would want:

- a carry gun... autoloader in .40 S&W
- a nightstand gun... .357 revolver with 4" barrel
- a snake killer.... lightweight .38 Special snubby revolver
- a hunting handgun... a .357 revolver with 6+" barrel

As for a zombie-killing arsenal, you're on your own!

You ought to try a nice (maybe high end) 1911 model .45 pistol. I found one at a local pawn shop this past year and it has really enlightened me and never have I found shooting as enjoyable as now. Now I know why all the top pistol competitors shoot 1911's.

If it were me, I'd want a nice bolt action scoped rifle, probably in .308, 30-06, or similar. That seems to be the most glaring omission in your collection so far. That, or a pump/semi 12 gauge. You've got the pistols/revolvers and .22's covered. The SKS is a nice touch. I'd just want something longer range and accurate, w/optics, to round out your collection.

You need a single action revolver and a lever action

Some kind of 1873 SAA clone. If you want accuracy and adjustable sights go with a Blackhawk. .45 Colt would come to mind. 44 magnum would be good as well.
You could also get a Winchester 92 clone that are really handy and chambered for most handgun cartridges. A single action/lever action combo in the same caliber is a nice thing to have. Rossi makes a good '92 clone that is lots of fun to shoot.

And, of course

Since you already shoot .357, you could get a carbine in .357 (e.g. Marlin 1894C) and a Ruger Blackhawk Convertible in .357/9mm (that's a single action).

You'd have two distinctly different weapons from what you already have, and you wouldn't have to stock another ammo calibre.

Of course, if you're actually looking to break into a new calibre, see the above post.

What Lonestar.45 said, except I wouldn't limit myself to a bolt action rifle. The M1 Garand is a possibility... or FAL... or M14.

.22lr target pistol

I note a vast hole of need for a quality .22 target pistol.
I have a older High Standard Citation that I shoot more then any other pistol.
Another neat item would be a L frame S&W converted to full moon clips for the 9/23 that would enable you to shoot various 9mm cartriges.
And your missing a decent double rifle.

Get a Garand. They won't be around at the CMP price forever and once they're gone, you'll regret not having one.

I have immense fun with carbines, especially an AK. Much more fun than the SKS actually. Even a Mosin m38 is a blast, and cheap no less.

My CZ Kadet is addictive as well. I can hit a hanging bowling pin most of the time at 75-100 yards with it.

Oh...get some Tannerite. :D

A semi-complete collection would be....

.177 or .20 pellet rifle (birds, target)
.22 rimfire (everybody should have a .22)
.22 mag, .17 HMR, (short range larger varmints, crows, etc.)
.223 (probably a good AR)
.22-250 or .220 Swift (king of varmint rounds)
.243 or .25-06 (deer, longer range heavy gun for varmints in wind, etc)
accurate 7mm mag, .308, 30-06 (target, hunting)
.45-70 lever (for hog hunting, CAS and just because they're cool)

if you're into the milsurp thing, obviously an AR or SKS
K-31, Swedish, Mosin.....
everybody should have an SKS anyway

Shotguns...

12 gauge 870 pump (see any of McCracken's posts in the shotgun forum)
if you live in a shotgun for deer area, get a rifled barrel
maybe an O/U 12 gauge if you shoot clays (and why wouldn't you?)
20 or 28 if you're into birds and for rabbits in brush
(might want to add a 10 gauge if you're really into geese and turkeys and just want another gun)

Pistols....

pocket pistol
9mm
target accurate .22 semi-auto or revolver
1911 .45acp
big bore revolver in .44 mag or .45 LC. .357 would do
whatever your CCW is if it's not on this list

This would be for the guy that hunts a lot and wants to pretty much cover every base. Obviously there are lots of other guns that are cool to have, but there's little that couldn't be done with these

It sounds like you have enough medium caliber handguns for now. I wouldn't use a .357 for a nightstand gun, unless you load it with .38s. The old over-penetration thing.

How about a nice .45 of some kind ? 1911's (or some derivitive thereof) are hard to fault. Fun to shoot, too. Personally, I would try to find a Ruger Redhawk in .45 Colt. They stopped making them last year, for some reason, so it might not be easy. Or a 45 Colt single action Blackhawk or New Vaquero, for something a little different.

IMO, a complete collection should contain a:

.45 ACP
12 ga. pump; short barrel for home defense
multiple milsurp; Mosin, Lee-Enfield, Mauser, Schmidt K31
SKS
single-action revolver; multiple calibers

Thanks for the suggestions so far! My collection is not for a single use; it is a toolbox w/ tools for different needs.

So far, I have the pocket pistol, snub revolvers, 4" .357, and plastic carry piece taken care of. IMO, I don't NEED anymore pistols.....although the PT-92, XD-45, and especially the Taurus Tracker 4" .44Mag are callin out to me!

I don't hunt anything more than crows and squirrels at the moment, but was going to start hunting deer and hogs this year.....but that hasn't panned out. So I would like a powerful rifle that would double for long-range marksmanship and for hunting. The K31 and scoping it has been my strong consideration for a while, but it doesn't have a burning need.

And I strongly believe no home is complete without a pump shotgun! But I do have a 12 gauge, and similarly don't feel a huge need for another.

And I have enough ammo for the guns set back, so no need for that suggestion ;) I'm trying to get my needs out of the way while I can, but money's slowed down a bit and I'm scrutinizing every purchase, as my purchases are getting fewer and farther between.....

I have a similar sized collection and have the same thoughts regarding my next purchases....

"Need" is subjective. On paper I guess I "need" a long-range rifle; you seem to be in the same boat. Be sure to be honest with yourself about how much 300+ yard shooting you'll be doing though - and keep in mind that it won't exactly be a plinker/"funtime" deal to shoot. That's what has kept me at bay.

Pump gauge is always good to round out a collection, but again... not a plinker/"funtime" deal. I bet mine won't see 100 rounds my whole life, but it's nice that it's there.

Another different kind of ammo to worry about is a consideration too, not wanting to deal with that keeps me at bay as well. Besides the above two, what I would recommend for you to round things out is what I would recommend for myself; a .22 pistol or maybe a .357 lever rifle (which is much harder to justify than the pistol, but I happen to be crazy about leverguns) [EDIT: Maybe a 9mm carbine might work for you also]. Just make sure it's something you'll enjoy.
