Training.

Ammo.

Range Time.

Apply all of the above to your current collection and you will know what your next purchase will be.

Exactly. And since you're planning to hunt deer/hog sized game soon, a bolt-action in .30-06 w/quality scope in 6X (or 3-9X40 if you prefer variables) can handle any hunting situation you'll likely encounter. But then again, EVERYONE needs at least 1 1911 & N-frame Smith, right?

Guns that I believe every collection should include

Rifles:
AR15
FN FAL
HK91/G3 (or Cetme or clone)

Handguns:
1911 .45acp

Also, consider investing in reloading equipment.

El Tejon sez...
red, that's fine for a 12 year old boy but what about an adult? In Indiana we call that list, "the starter set".
Once he covers these bases, we'll fine tune the list to include

Muzzle Loaders and BP
Long range BP
Metallic Silhouette
Matching pistol/rifle combo's
Tactical
SA's

add a 10mm or two, a .375 H&H or .458

the boy's got a lot of catching up to do

Don't feel bad if you don't like a 1911.

However, i would consider trading in the Sigma for something else, unless you reeaaaaaaaallllly like it. Everyone says they're junk.... I don't know, I've never owned one.

You need a good scoped bolt-action - "Ain't a many problems that a man can't fix with ah $700 dollars and a .30-06" !!! (I think that's how it goes:p )

No 1911's for me! Don't particularly like them. Don't have a use for them. I WOULD like a nice .45, but the XD is lighter, higher capacity, and generally (purely subject to opinion!) more reliable out of the box. If I went for a .45, it would for sure be the XD-45.

The Sigma is a great gun. It fills it's role perfectly. It's extremely ergonomic, reliable, has no safeties to worry about, and has a heavy enough trigger to keep my worry-free for carry. Older models had problems, the new VE's have no problems except for the heavy trigger, which is actually something I wanted for my main carry piece.

Since you're thinking of a 12 guage,how about a Norinco 1887 clone.Its a lever action 12 gauge with a 20 inch bbl.I think it holds 6+1.

In my honest and humble opinion, you should look for:

model 1911A .45 of some kind
a Browning High Power (BHP) or a GOOD licensed clone
Beretta 92
CZ-75

The above handguns have been/are the most popular and widespread semi-automatic handguns in the world! The first two are literal icons as far as handguns are concerned!
