id go stag or bushy for a gas powered, check out MGI or patriot or Krebs or robinson or a couple of others for a piston drive.

I just picked up a Bushmaster at Sportsman's Warehouse for $949.00. That's the M4A3, which has a removeable carry handle. If you don't mind a fixed carry handle, those were running for $879.00. Now I just need to find a range to sight it in.

In that price range, I'd look at a CMMG upper with whatever decent priced lower you can find. Asside from the trigger, there isn't all that much variation in the lowers.

It'd be easier for people to give recommendations if you were more specific in what you're looking for? ie: 16" or 20" barrel? long range varmint gun or milk jug plinker?

You can save a couple hundred bucks by buying the upper and lower separately.

The gun that I'm putting together ended up being $771. It's an Ameetec Arms M4 lower with an RRA A4 midlength upper w/SS barrel and LMT BUIS.

Any company except for a custom job will have one in that range.

My suggestions (not in any particular order):
DMPS
Armalite
Bushmaster
Rock River
Build-Your-Own-Precisely-How-You-Want-It

"Search"...Key Word-AR15

You'll find a thing or 10,000

HAHA, I know, this has to be the most asked question on this forum.

By the way, I like STAG or RRA

With a budget of $1,000 it shouldn't be very hard to find a good quality AR.

If it were me, I'd go with either RRA or Bushmaster.

The RRA is the big craze these days. The best feature of their rifles is the 2-stage trigger they have. It is significantly better than a stock AR trigger. They have good fit and finish. Very clean, very smooth.

The advantage of the Bushmaster is that their barrels are 4150 steel and chrome lined. I believe chrome lining is now an option on RRA rifles, but it is standard for Bushmaster.

There's also the build-it-yourself option. For that, I'd absolutely go with CMMG. They have a super-light barrel with med-length gas in 1/7 twist with M4 feedramps that is THE ticket in my opinion. All the ideal features put together. It is 14.5" with a perm attached phantom. While not a fan of perm attached flash hiders, the phantom is my favorite, and the 14.5 with FH is the shortest possible barrel you can get without requiring govt approval. That barrel has me itching badly to build another AR. Light, short, can shoot heavy bullets, chrome lined, M4 ramps, top notch FH...and a less abusive gas system. Ideal. Simply ideal.

You can add the RRA two-stage trigger for less than $100. I was going to do that, but found I liked the stock trigger on my DPMS lower so well that I didn't want to mess with it.

Buying a seperate upper and lower is the only way to go. It is easier to put the components together than it is to field strip a Glock--snap the pieces together, push in two pins, and you've just earned $200 for 30 seconds of work. I cannot conceive of any logical reason for not going this route. Anyone who is so inept that they can't put the pieces together probably shouldn't have their clumsy paws on a firearm in the first place.
