Hi there. My daughter and I made the decision to get into Bow Hunting next year. As with everything I do that is not related to family, home and college funds I need to cut corners and buy used.

I purchased a bow today for $30 and I have some questions.

I learned to do the following when buying a bow:

Inspect the string (Although the string was not recently waxed, there was not fraying and the sight and arrow "thingy" on the string seemed to be in good condition.

Inspect mounting holes. This one had sights, etc... so I unscrewed them with permission from the owner and verified that everything was in good working order as far as the screw holes and such.

Inspect the bows for stress cracks and damage (This was tough as the bow was a) covered with camo tape and b) had been spray painted) At this point, I said... this concerns me. He was asking $50 and dropped it to $30. I said ok. I will take it home and inspect it.

So, when I got the bow home I removed the tape and started to "scrape" away at the edge of the limbs to see if there were any stress cracks. I thought I saw one, but it was just where the laminate came together. Nice wood and finish actually. I then started to scratch away the rattle can job to expose the limbs to identify the make and model.

Well, first thing I noticed was RAMBO in bright orange letters. I thought some crackpot stenciled it on there or something. But then after doing some research I discovered that HOYT/Easton made some of these bows after the movie and that for whatever reason the Black/Orange were pretty hot tickets.

So, here is my questions.

1 - Is this bow worth putting some money into it? I just want a arrow holder (Quiver?), new sights and a new arrow rest.

2 - Because of the age of this bow, will modern accessories fit the bow?

Take that bow to a local pro-shop. I can't tell for sure but it appears to have some string and serving wear above the peep sight. I would have it inspected by someone who knows what they are looking for. If the bow shoots and is deemed safe to shoot. There is no reason why it could not kill a deer with practice on your part. Have the peep sight adjusted and draw length adjusted to fit you if you can. Shoot the heck out of it. Get addicted buy yourself another bow. Retire that hoyt to a bow-fishin rig after a year or two.

you should be able to find accessories for it without much issue. with some good carbon arrows it should shoot well enough to kill a deer without issue. price was just fine for an older bow. you might want to check draw weight and length to decide on broadheads.

i would most likely bet that you will be best served with a good "cut on contact" 2 blade head (i really like magnus stingers. my first bow was 20 years old and not "super fast." i killed 12 deer with those heads and almost always got good blood trails.) to aide in penetration.

stick with the basics and you will be just fine. and tons of practice of course. remember...pull the bow apart when you shoot! good luck!

I have much to learn. When looking at the sight I do not see the wear, maybe light.... not sure, but either way your advice to have it looked at is solid advice.

I have much to learn, but the reason I bought it now is that I want to shoot as much as possible before August.

Be prepared bowhunting is addictive. I gave up rifle hunting years ago. Nothing better than a succsesful bowhunt.

youll know if your string is frayed. just look and feel for thin spots or burrs. get some good string wax and use a candle to heat it a little before you rub it in. and if you get it looked at, ask to use the chrono at the pro shop. this will give you and idea for the right arrow, fletchings, and heads.

Every pro shop I have ever been in is full of guys that enjoy helping new people. Hie thee to a pro shop, friend. You will be surprised at how nice archery people are!
