Pictured on the left is an unidentified 55gr. projectile (HPBT w/ C) that I have a number of, for which I'd like to load. Pictured on the right is a regular M193 projectile to give for a reference. As you can see, the cannelures are offset by quite a lot, and their profiles are quite different. 1000004162.jpg

Question #1- Any clue as to the maker of this bullet on the left? I'd like to see if there is any data for it before I start going off on my own trying to improvise.

Question #2
I did a quick measurement, and figured that if seated to the cannelure the OAL on finished cartridge for the bullet on the left would be around 1.175" I did find some data for other 55gr projectiles that are in this OAL ballpark (Speer hollow points) however these have no cannelure, and I'm also unsure of the length of those Speer bullets...... Mmmmm hmmmm.
Any possible insights would be helpful.

The difference in data for 2 different bullets of the same 55gr weight is gigantic.
The starting charge for one can be over the maximum for the other.....so, not gonna gamble. :) Unless I just seat at a long OAL with the cannelure well above the case mouth.

There’s an app that lets you take a picture of a plant and it identifies it. Someone needs to do that for bullets.
I don’t have any of those hollow points but am interested what you find. Where’d you get them, the dollar store in a plain paper bag?

Close, bought at a gunshow back in the day. Price was somewhere in the 30$ to 40$ range for the whole box which has at least 1500 bullets. The worst part was he did tell me what they were but I'll be damned if I can remember.

I also think it looks like the Hornady #2263. Midsouth has a listing for them here.

And I can't find any data for that specific bullet either. I would use the Hornady 55gr FMJ-BT data and ignore the cannelure as someone else mentioned. Start low and work up and I bet you find a good load.

If you look at a Hornady manual, they lump all bullets of the same caliber, cartridge, and weight over the same load table. They don't have specific individual bullet data.
I'm aware, but they still list the different bullets with their product numbers, which this Bullet product number isn't in there.
👍 👌

I have some Hornady 62gr HPBT that were purchased for MidSouth. There is a part number on these but like you Hornady does not list this bullet anywhere. Was this one made specifically for MidSouth? IDK.

Unless your gearing up for a full auto whohaa, I would load them to your standard OAL and run with working up a nice shooting load.

I have run plenty of load tests through my AR over the past year and checked for bullet set back, both in the mags and in the chamber as they were loaded and shot. To date I have had nothing move with just case neck tension. I also do not pay any attention to the location of the cannalure when seating, I usually use the max mag length less what enables them to feed properly.
