Just did a complete field strip & cleaning on my Mossberg 702 Plinkster .22lr rifle and....:uhoh:.......well, the feed ramp looks a little worn to say the least.

How did this happen to the feed ramp?

I've put well over 6000 rounds through this rifle and it's ran like a champ the whole time!
I'd say 95% of this ammo was either Federal or Remington Bulk Pack HP.

I bought it 6yrs ago when I was 18. I know it's a cheap gun but it was the first gun I ever bought so its value is sorta "priceless" in that regard. Not to mention I've shot this rifle to the point that I can instinctively hit anything I want inside of 75yrds.

I haven't had any problems with the feeding to date, So with that said;

1. How did this happen? (Cheap pot Metal or something?)

2. Is it a potential problem with all "cheap?" 22lrs?

3. My friend Mr. J.B. Weld wants to know if he can help if it becomes a problem down the road?

I appreciate any help or advice yall can give me with this!

stop using any type stinger round, use only copper washed/plated solid point rounds, don't use any hypervelocity rounds, best to stick with standard or sub velocity rounds. a mossberg 702 is not worth repairing, as their cost is so low, and they have no resale value whatsoever. Shoot it until it dies.

Looks like the bolt maybe hit the feed ramp? The receiver is aluminum alloy. Not the worst quality, but steel bolt vs. alloy receiver, alloy looses.
Its still feeding correctly right? Who cares?

I love my 702 Plinkster. It was my first gun after turning 18 as well. Id like to see how good a Marlin or Ruger would do held to a $115 price point. Certainly you might get unlucky and get a lemon, but that happens with any manufacturer.

JB weld will work for a while, but it will likely get knocked off just like the metal did. You can live with it (assuming it doesnt cause any missfeeds or anything) or you can email mossberg and see if they will fix it for you.

As far as not using high velocity rounds, thats what the gun was designed to run on, it says so right in the manual. Sub sonic ammo might not cycle the action properly (I say might because ive used Remington thunderbolt subsonics in mine and they fed and fired perfectly, but it is lower power ammo and YMMV).

with the 20 dollar mail in rebate, and you can find marlin 795's for 120 or 129 bucks on sale at Academy's right now, that means you can pick up a 795 for 100 to 110 bucks plus tax right now...

Like I said the rifle has had absolutely no feeding problems to date. So I guess if it becomes a problem down the road I'll do one of the following;

1. Call Mossberg in hopes that they can fix/replace the feed ramp under warranty.

2. If Mossberg Can't/Won't I will breakout the J.B. Weld and mend it on my own. (Pot metal shaped on pot metal= Original pot metal feed ramp right?)

3. If that don't work......Save the rifle for parts and buy a brand new one from Wal-Mart for $107

Sounds like a good plan.

Out of curioisity, what kind of 50 yard groups do you get out of your 702? Have you found any aftermarket stuff that works with it?

At 50 yrds I'm a surgeon with this rifle! I can naturally predict the trajectory for holding the iron sights over and nail anything minute of a coke can.

As you can see from the pic the accumulated magazines I bought for it make fixing or buying another one more practical than trashing it for something else.

Wal-Mart had the factory Mags on sale for $9 bucks several months ago

Minute of coke can huh? Yeah that sounds about right.

Ive been mostly running .22 CB shorts in mine to avoid upsetting the neighbors with sounds of gunfire. You can load up to three in a magazine and then work the gun as a single shot.

Heres mine with some....modifications?

Its sort of my "survival" .22 rifle. Its got a stash of ammo under the butt plate, and a small 2.5" Case folding knife stuck in the front of the foregrp that can be removed and used as a tool for unscrewing the buttplate, clearing FTE jams and such, and other things.

^very nice RevolvingGarbage! If you have the time would you mind posting a pic of your feed ramp so I can reference what it's supposed to look like?

It looks like the little piece yours is missing doesnt amount to much, especially since the gun is still feeding fine. Theres a good chance its been like that since your first few mags and you just didnt notice.

I see what your saying by the pics which comforts me very well

You know I just tried this today with some CBshorts and am quite shocked to see that your right. If you hadn't said anything I would of never for the life of me believed .22 shorts could be manually fed through a .22lr mag!

Another great idea you brought to my attention i'm going to use!

:)Thanks Man, I appreciate the hell out of the pics! Please post any other great ideas or aftermarket mods you find for this rifle down the road! You've been a great help RevolvingGarbage!
