Well most who have ever browsed the revolving rifle showcase at Wal-Mart are sure to have noticed the Mossberg 702 Plinkster. Its the lowest priced gun they sell. I bought one almost 4 years ago when I was 19, and paid around $90 bucks out the door. I believe it sells for just over $100 now.

It is the true definition of a "beater/expendable" rifle because of its low price. Nonetheless, looking back at its service with me, I have become fond of my little 702 Plinkster.

I have shot box after box of federal bulk ammo in it to the point it singed my skin if I contacted the barrel. And cleaning the rifle, I never knew the word until this past week, when it refused to eject rat-shot rounds reliably. For 4 1/2 years!, I sh&t you not, I must of shot well over 5000 rounds without cleaning the damn gun once! Looking back, I treated it like complete sh&t, but nonetheless it always went bang.

Since the instruction manual lacks the directions to disassemble the gun, I learned from some forum a few days back. The sole reason, I even bothered to learn was to make it reliably eject and chamber rat shot 22lr. Their was so much damn grime, dirt, soot, etc embedded, that I soaked all the parts in GooGone and solvent using a toothbrush to aid the removal. Then I hosed the parts & did it again, after which using a air compressor to dry it. I lubed it, put it back together and let it rest for the night.

Well today, I set up some cans in my backyard and laid down 6 topped off magazines with the last 2 loaded with rat-shot on my bench. I took aim with the cocked&locked rifle & proceeded to spray&pray (aka quickly plink) the cans tactically reloading the topped off magazines 1 by 1 until they were all empty. All was fine and dandy until I came to the last two magazines loaded with rat-shot and had to continually re-rack the bolt as I heard click multiple times throughout.

So now that the 702 Plinkster is looking pretty, all cleaned up, it still refuses to reliably eject 22 rat-shot. But that's alright since I now place the blame on RAT-SHOT not being able to cycle through a semi-auto.

Throughout reading this little ramble of mine, In the end, I strongly recommend & respect the 702 Plinkster from Wal-Mart for its durability as well as reliability. Because of its price, Ya won't be afraid to let it get thrown around in your truck, and dropped on the ground as I have done multiple times. Just like the almighty Chevy Z71 pick up, its like a Rock!

And p.s. on Mossbergs International site, it seems that they make a version with a frikkin big ass muzzle brake! I mean *** is that things purpose on a little 22lr. However I must say, it does look pretty damn badass & extremely tactiCOOOOL!

wow, I had to go see it on the site myself to believe it wasn't a photoshop joke. Did Mossberg pick up a bunch of free 50cal muzzle breaks and decide to slap them on whichever gun made the least sense with it? Good to hear Mossberg can turn out a winner for so cheap. I just did the same type of cleaning to my 10/22. It is about 40 years old and I think this was its first detail strip/clean. It had a couple FTEs and I decided to scrub it down.

Here's an exerpt from a Mossberg Press Release & a link to a article from tactical-life.com about the muzzle brake version.

"Mossberg International puts on the brakes – muzzle brakes, that is! The muzzle brake reduces recoil in an already mild shooting platform, increasing one’s ability for a more accurate follow-up shot. This benefits the shooter whether plinking at tin cans or hunting small game."

I would have an irrational fear of being roundly mocked if I showed up anywhere with a .22 with a muzzle break on it. I mean come on....

So is this a good gun? A buddy was going to buy one and the lady at Wal-Mart told us that everyone she had sold had come back with a problem so that she didn't recommend it. She said it was up to us if we wanted it but she couldn't recommend it after that.
I thought it felt nice for that price and my buddy was ready to buy it until that.

Were the ones she sold just oddballs or do a lot of them have issues?

RAT-SHOT not being able to cycle through a semi-auto.

Bingo! That is your problem. I have used .22 cal rat shot for years and have never had it cycle a .22 auto-loader.

Cleetus - I totally agree with you. I probably clean mine every 1K rounds or so and have barely so much as run a Q-Tip on the inside of the trigger group. For such a cheap gun, it's really accurate and reliable.

So what kind of 5 or 10 shot groups do you get at 50 yards with the Mossberg?

FWIW I've never had a semi auto that would cycle and feed rat shot.

What are they really selling for at walmart right now? The cheapest I see on gunbroker is about 150 with some at 180. For that price I'd go Marlin or Savage.

Had one, sold it asap. Would not shoot to point of aim. Even in a rest it was all over the place. Used the proceeds to buy a used 10/22.

Current Walmart price is $107, its one of those types of guns everyone should own. I bought a used one at pawn shop for $49... its actually not the Mossberg 702 but the Magtech 7022 that mossberg bought and now produces as the 702. The Magtech had a wood stock, mine shoots strait, is only used for plinking. Its very lightweight, a breeze to carry around. Its neat you can buy any semi-automatic gun for $107 NEW, but on value I still don't thing its at the top. The $193 Walmart Ruger 10/22 will do everything better, a while its a lot more (percentage wise) if you owned one you would rather have one. The same pawn shop that my $49 Magtech/mossberg came from sells their used 10/22s for $229 (??), so you could say resale is BETTER. The other great 22lr value is also from Walmart, its a Savage MKII for $117 (without accutrigger) bolt action and is a wonderfull gun that is very accurate out of the box. Actually to get anythign that shoots better you will at least have to pay double+ the price in the walmart special order catalog for a CZ452. Walmart also carries the Marlin 60 also for $147, its a great little gun but they have made them forever and you can pickup in pawn shops for $75 or so. I'd buy a used one of those over a new 702 also, the tube on mine olds 18rds (that varies) it is also very lightweight and known be accurate and I like the tube feed.

I'd rather eat worms than shop at WalMart.

Their low prices come on the backs of their employees.

The Marlin 795 is a much better rifle and Marlin has a rebate right now.

Great review; thanks! The Plinkster sounds like a winner. Not gonna trade in my Marlin 60 anytime soon, but may have to add a plinkster.
